    Investment in College education<\/p>\n

    Some students know what they want to be when they enter college but others are not sure of their future plans. College is not just about study and getting a job after graduation but it is also a place for learning about yourself and mature into a responsible person to family, to society, and to your country. The time in college is relatively short with many things to learn so it is important that students prepare themselves for this challenge. Lack of preparation is the number one cause of college failure and students drop out.<\/p>\n

    When students enter college, they must think seriously about what kind of career that they want to pursue and this is THEIR CHOICE. A \u201ccareer\u201d is something that they will do for life when a \u201cjob\u201d is something they do just to get paid. Student must think of career, NOT of job when they select their field of study. I think it is very important to emphasize this difference when students think about what they want to do in their life. Student must find this answers themselves because it is their life and their future. They must ask these questions: \u201cWhat do I love doing? What subjects that I like? What are things that I feel compelling to do most?. What I am very good at? What are things that important to me? It is important to match their career plans to study area that is important to them. If they have to study something that they do not like or do not feel strongly about than they will not be successful.<\/p>\n

    However, as students are making decisions, they must consider the \u201cReality\u201d factor. For example, if they love soccer, maybe they want to be soccer players but the question is do they need a college education just to be a soccer player? Anyone can always play soccer as a sport. I know many software engineers who play soccer after work because soccer is a sport but it may not be a career that you can do for life. Of course, there are professional soccer players who are doing very well like Beckham or Renaldo. However, there are very few of them in this world but many million people who want to be like them. The same thing also happens if students want to be movie stars. This is a very exciting career and super stars make a lot of money but the chance to be one is probably one in a billion. That is why students need to take into consideration the \u201cReality\u201d factor to make sure that their choices are \u201creasonable\u201d and based on reality NOT \u201cwishes\u201d.<\/p>\n

    If math is your best subject, and things having to do with calculation excite you, think about selecting Accounting, Finance or Mathematics. If you like machines and mechanical things, think about engineering fields. If you like technology, maybe computer science or software engineering are good choices. If you are not sure, you may ask your school advisors, talk to students who study in certain field or take different kind of classes, read different books to find a subject that interest you. A better way is asking people who are working in that field to get an idea of what the work might be like. Each year, I always recommend students to visit software companies, talk to people who work there and come back to discuss about what they have observed in class. It is reasonable to change your mind in the first year of college but you must make firm decision to continue with a career choice in the second year because changing field of study late incurs expenses, waste of time, and delay your graduation.<\/p>\n

    Students must choose your education carefully because it is a major investment of yourself and your family. It is your time, your efforts, and your future that you are making a decision on. In addition to increasing your knowledge and bettering your skills, college education can help you to build a career that you want with better wages and stable life. In this globalized world, a college education is a necessary, a requirements and an important asset. Your knowledge and skills are what you have and you can take them with you wherever you go. The degree is NOT as important as the knowledge and experiences you have during your time in college. The way you learn, the learning activities that you engage in, the friends and people that you meet, are important factors for a successful career in the future. They are the foundations that you will build your future on.<\/p>\n

    Today we are living in a globalized world, everything is changing very fast and many things are not staying the same as they used to. As you begin your career, you will have to compete with others like you, not just in your country but in every country in the world. That is why you must take your education seriously, NEVER take any \u201cshort cut\u201d because beside the knowledge, your time in college also help you to build your character, your strength, your personality. You must focus on being an \u201ceducated\u201d person, a good citizen, a wiser consumer, and a responsible person to your family, your friends, and your country.<\/p>\n

    What can you do to make sure that your investment in college education is paying off? Select the right field of study and enjoy it. How do you know that you are selecting the right field of study? You know that when:<\/p>\n
