Study in the U.S<\/p>\n

Yesterday, a student wrote to me: \u201cI want to get a Master degree in the U.S. and I found many online schools and correspondent mail order universities that offer degrees and allow me to stay in my country. Is it possible? What do you think? Please advise.”<\/p>\n

Answer: Getting a Master degree requires significant investment of your time, effort and your family\u2019s money. From what I know, there is no such thing as getting an U.S degrees by a mail-order or online programs without travel to the U.S. It seems that it is a \u201cScam\u201d. My advice: \u201cStay away\u201d, if it sound too good then maybe it is NOT good at all. Do not believe in those \u201cMarketing Scams\u201d such as go to school at home, earn a U.S degrees without leaving your country, get an U.S degrees in the internet. These schools only want your money and give you a \u201cworthless degree\u201d.<\/p>\n

While there are some programs available online through correspondence courses that will get you a degree, you must make sure that the degree you receive from that particular university is accredited. The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by those universities meets acceptable levels of quality. Accreditation in the U.S involves non-governmental organizations as well as governmental agencies. Accrediting agencies are educational associations of regional or national scope that develop evaluation criteria and conduct evaluations to assess whether those criteria are met. Universities that meet that criteria are then accredited by that agency. Without accreditation you do NOT have a degree; you ONLY have a very expensive \u201cpiece of paper\u201d.<\/p>\n

Every U.S university will tell you if they are accredited, in what states they are accredited, and which educational governing agencies have accredited them. To be sure, you may want to check with the agency that accredited them too. Many \u201cBogus schools\u201d also advertise about their \u201caccreditation\u201d since they only operate for a short time to get your money then disappear before police arrive and close their school. All accredited universities are recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and will be listed on their website at\u00a0www.chea.org<\/a>. so you can check them out. There is another way to verify by check with the Better Business Bureau for any listed complaints against any university atwww.bbb.org<\/a>. You can look for the operating license because every university must have a charter for operations in a particular state. Even top schools like Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton need permission and a license to operate too. If the university that you want to apply do NOT have a operating license, then they are operating illegally, and you need to stay away from them. If you are going to spend time, effort and money for your education then you must make sure that you do not waste them on a \u201cScam\u201d. Check out the school and ensure that it is accredited before you apply.<\/p>\n

Today there are many \u201clegitimated\u201d online programs that offers online degrees but the acceptance of these degrees is still being debated within certain industry. Many companies are still reluctant to hire students who received degrees from online schools. Last year, there were several incidents regarding some online schools in the U.S that had students who \u201cHired\u201d others to study and took exams for them. There were complains about the skills of students from some online programs as companies after hired them had to fire them. There was notion that some online programs was not good that anybody could get degrees without studying and there was issues on transferring credits from online schools to other universities. All of these issues are still being debated in the U.S and how it turn out is still unknown.<\/p>\n

My advice to student who want to go to the U.S to continue the education is you must be careful about the school that you want to go to, whether it is online or not. It is still your education, your learning, your degree, your time, your efforts and your money and more important it is your career and your future.
