Learning in team<\/p>\n

A professor asked me: \u201cI am not sure about the benefit of teamwork. When my students work in team, many have no interest in learning anything but just do it to satisfy my requirements. In every team, maybe one or two would do all the works and others just watching and not learning much.” Do you have any advice?<\/p>\n

Answer:\u00a0In order for teams to work well, they must divide the work equally and organize the team by roles and responsibilities. Each member must fulfill its individual responsibilities, contribute to the team, support each other, and deliver quality work accordingly. They must set expectations for each member, be able to warn non-contribute members that may compromise team\u2019s productivity.<\/p>\n

As a team, they must work together to solve problems, answer questions about reading assignments. By having discussion among team members, they can learn the basics. When they discuss among themselves, they are figuring things out instead of having the professor tell them the answers. And that is where learning takes place. When students are trying to explain things to each other, they argue, discuss and debate this interaction clarifies their own thinking as well as clarifies the thinking of others. That is how they learn and it is the benefit of teamwork<\/p>\n

By learning in team, students can see how different views, opinions, and critical analysis can result in better solutions and better understanding. In a team, students share what they know, debate the answers, and through that process can often find the right answer instead of passively accept what the professor said. If they figure things out via their own reasoning, they learn it well. If they wait for the answer from the teacher they may not learn much.<\/p>\n

Of course, not all teams are doing well. Sometime students do not learn because the team is not well organized where team members are all passive and wait for someone to lead them or do the work for them. You cannot randomly put students in team and expect better learning immediately. It is important for the professor to organize the team by provide some trainings on teamwork then help students deal with team issues that compromise their effectiveness until the team functions well.<\/p>\n

Without learning teamwork, students will have difficulty when they are interviewing for job or go to work. Today teamwork is one of the most important soft skills required by the industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
