This is probably the most \u201cchallenging time\u201d for any professors because new students need a lots of guidance to build good study habit. This is also an opportunity to \u201cshape\u201d their learning process because if they develop good learning skill NOW, it will stay with them for the rest of their time in college and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Not all first year students have the \u201cfoundation\u201d needed to successfully complete college coursework. Some will need to take additional \u201cremedial courses\u201d to build a stronger foundation before they can start regular college courses. It is important that school advisors review students\u2019 record and college entrance exam scores to determine whether students will need to take remedial courses or not. Students without good foundation but taking regular courses may not do well and it can lead to disappointment, frustration, failure and eventually quit school. In that case, not just the student failed but we, the educators, also failed them because we did NOT help them to take the needed corrective action.<\/p>\n<p>There are studies indicate that additional courses for remediation can fully resolve the disadvantage and skill deficiency of students. For over 30 years of college teaching, I found that remedial course not only works, it works very well. However, there is a belief that \u201cremedial courses\u201d add more time in college and helps make money to schools, especially private schools (Most top schools in the U.S. are private). That is why some parents do not want their children to take remedial courses. Several years ago, I had a student who did not have the necessary skills to take my class so I suggested that he took the calculus remedial course. His parents were angry, they complained that he already passed the college entrance examination, therefore qualified for any college courses. His father said: \u201cMy son is the smartest in my neighborhood. It is you that want to push him back\u201d. After that, they moved him to another class as they did not like my suggestion. At the end of the year, he failed several courses and quit school.<\/p>\n<p>To \u201cshape\u201d the study habit of students, it is important for professors to explain to students about the correlation between efforts and results. The more they study, the more they put in the effort, better they do well in class. Many students do not understand this correlation and manage their time poorly. Some often skip classes but spend the all day and all night cramming just before the exam and hope that they can still pass. To make sure that students will be successfully, I often apply a technique to show them the effectiveness of their study habit and their results. Here is how this technique works:<\/p>\n<p>After students have finished the exam, they must complete a \u201cTest analysis\u201d or else I will not accept the exam. The test analysis will ask them to predict their exam score and write down their study effort for the exam on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). They also have to write a short paragraph explain how they study for the exam (For example: By take notes in class, read textbooks, create short outlines to memorize, study in groups, etc.). After the exam has been graded and returned, students must do a second \u201cTest analysis\u201d by describe their response to your exam score on a scale of 1 to 5 where (1 = Surprised. 2 = Disappointed. 3 = \u00a0Relieved. 4 = Pleased and 5 = Extremely pleased). They must compare their actual score with their predicted score and explain how well or how poorly they predicted their score. They must identify where each exam question came from (in-class notes, textbooks material, group study or other resources) and then calculate the percentage of questions missed. By having these percentages, they can reflect on the way they study for the exam and the amount of time they spent. After the analysis, they must describe any changes that they plan to make in their study habit for the next exam. By reviewing, the second test analysis, I can give them extra point for their analysis which may change their grades.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cTest analysis and problem solving\u201d activity works very well. Because it happened early in the course, students can take correction on what they have learned and eventually change their study habit. To make sure that they understand the benefits of the analysis. I always explain the correlation between efforts and results and suggest few things that students can do to improve their exam performance.
