Conversation with a young professor<\/p>\n

After seven hard working years, Susan has completed her doctorate degree and got a teaching job at another university. She came to see me to say goodbye. She said: \u201cI really appreciate your helps throughout the years, I still remember what you said when I first entered the program that \u201cBeing a college professor is to make the difference in the life of students and of the world\u201d so before I leave, I would like to ask whether you have advices for a new professor like me?<\/p>\n

I told her: \u201cCongratulation, we are now colleague. We are sharing the same vision and mission about education. Since you asked, there are few things that I learned in my teaching careers so I want to share with you: \u201cAs educators, we want to focus on learning and promoting students\u2019 success. It is our duty to ensure that the classroom environment is optimal for learning. Following are some small tips that may help you and your students\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a professor, you must be proactive, not reactive. You must take command from the first day of class by setting their learning goals and let students know your expectations. Do not wait until some things happens than react to it. For example what would you do when a student\u2019s mobile phone ringing aloud in class? What would you do when a student being disrespectful and using \u201cbad language\u201d in class? You must set the rules and make sure that students understand them. For example, turn off mobile phone before entering class. No \u201cbad\u201d languages or argument in class. Violation will be asked to leave the class. Many students look at professors as \u201crole models\u201d so it is important that we act accordingly. We must be on time, we must be calm in any occasion and do NOT show our emotion. If you do NOT want students to use mobile phone in class than you must turn off your mobile phone too. If you show that you care for them and take time to help them, students will know that and will respect you for that. You must be fair in enforcing your classroom rules or else no one will obey them. It is important to spend time with students to advise them so please arrange your teaching time so that you can do that\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents go to college to learn, to develop knowledge and skills so they can take care of themselves and be successful in whatever they do. Based on my teaching experience, I believe that given clear objectives and access to good materials, most students can learn the basic by themselves. It would be a waste of time to stand up in class and tell them something that they can read from books and wait for them to write them down. To help students learn materials ON THEIR OWN, I always give a \u201cpre-class\u201d reading assignments, information that students will be using during class so they can learn before coming to class. Class begins with an overview of the topic and sometime a short test if I thinks students are not doing their pre-class preparation. Then it is discussion and teamwork with questions and answers and a short lectures to summarize what the important topics are. The \u201cLearning by Doing\u201d method is well understood and very effective.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, some students like to be told. It is easier that way for them and for professor too. But they need to learn how to study themselves because study is a HABIT and they need to develop this study habit NOW to prepare for their lifelong learning. If they are NOT going to learn anything unless the professor give them the information. If all they have to do is to \u201csit passively\u201d waiting \u201cTo be told\u201d than the learning results will be different. In this globalized world, where competitive is already intense, things will NOT be easy and students who are passive may NOT survive. Today students NOT ONLY have to be active in learning BUT they must ALSO learn to make decisions about what they need to know and how they will acquire that knowledge. I believe by having the expectation that students will learn the material on their own, we are promoting the skills and attitudes that they need to become self-directed life-long learners. Of course, by following this method, a professor must also believe that students are CAPABLE of independent learning, given proper guidance and support. To make thing work well, you must devote time to help students to help themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, NOT all students come to school to learn. Many like to skip classes. Many are unprepared, disengaged and unmotivated. How do we change it? We must build a relationship between teachers, parents and students. This kind of engagement is very important because we all are concerning with the education of students. If a student do not learn, I will let their parents know. Some students do not like it but as professor, I think we do have a duty to inform parents if their children do not make progress in school. Together we must find a corrective action. Of course, it will be more works for the professor, it will be more works for the parents, and it will be more works for the students. However, nothing will make us feel better than seeing the student overcomes problems and make progress.
