It is the Laptop’s fault<\/p>\n

Today many students have laptops and they bring them to schools. Parents do not hesitate to pay for this expensive item because having laptop means that their children are learning computer and keep pace with the current technology. However, technology can be a double-edge knife as it can help you or hurt you. Following is a letter of a student to his parents given to me by a friend:<\/p>\n

\u201cDear Mom and Dad, the reason that I failed college is NOT my fault but it is the Laptop\u2019s fault. I am a good student but the laptop made me bad. The laptop is responsible for my lack of motivation to study and failure in school.<\/p>\n

When I enter college, I ask you to buy me the best laptop, the most expensive that has the most powerful CPU, the fastest speed and largest drive so I can store more books, more lecture materials and \u2026 more computer games. But I did not know that it is the computer game that consume most of my time, make me cannot stop playing, even at midnight, even before the test, as it encourages me to study as little as possible. It is the laptop\u2019s fault, NOT me.<\/p>\n

When buying the Laptop, I also ask you to pay for the fastest internet access to download school materials and not wasting time waiting to access the internet like the old dial-up modem. Of course, the fastest Ethernet connection also allows me to download music, movies, and watch many \u201cexciting\u201d websites on line. I am addicted to these websites and endlessly search for more as there are so many things that I do not know. I do NOT have time to do anything else, including study. So the Web and the laptop are the main culprits, NOT me.<\/p>\n

Laptop is a wonderful thing with so many functions. With email, I can correspondent with many people and not spend money on stamps. With chat room, I can talk to so many people all over the world at anytime, night and day, and do not have to pay for long distance phone call. (You must be proud that your son is saving money). Some of them also teach me \u201cnew languages\u201d that are NOT in any dictionary. (You must be happy that I am learning new foreign language) With the click of a mouse, I can do so many things, sending emails to hundred people at the same time, to a girl in school or to people across the world. Now I have more friends than ever. (In chat room, I can talk to ten girls at the same time) That is why I skip class all the time. So it is the laptop\u2019s fault, NOT me.<\/p>\n

By the way, I am NOT the only to have this problem. Most of my friends in school have it too. In college, the issue of having the latest laptops has reached a new level. As we sit with our laptops in the coffee shop, we look at each other\u2019s laptops and compare. The one with the latest laptops are \u201cHeroes\u201d and the one that have \u201cOld, used\u201d laptops are \u201cbad guys\u201d and no girl would look at them. This is what’s really happening on college all over the country and probably the world. So it is the Laptop\u2019s fault, NOT me.<\/p>\n

Dear Mom and Dad, you told me to go to school and learn technology so I can get \u201cjob<\/b>\u201d. I found a better way, I found \u201cJob\u201d \u2013 \u201cSteve Jobs<\/b>\u201d. He is my hero and he dropping out of school to sell \u201cApple<\/b>\u201d and become a multi millionaire. He said that \u201claptop is thing of the past, the future belongs to iPads. If you want to be a technology savvy, you must have iPads\u201d. Now, some of my friends already have both iPhones and iPads and they are the new heroes in school.<\/p>\n

Dear Mom and Dad, whatever happened is the Laptop\u2019s fault so I do NOT want to play with a bad friend like Laptop anymore. I want to start a new life, I want to start everything new, I want to have new friend. Could you give me money to buy an iPads 2.0 and an iPhone 4.0?<\/p>\n
