Parents and career choices<\/p>\n

In Asia, parents always have a profound influence on their children\u2019s career development. However, when I taught in China, Japan and S. Korea, I met many parents who complained that their children have selected something completely different from what they wished and they were not happy.<\/p>\n

When students want to pursue a particular field of study in college, some parents feel that they should interfere if that field is not their choice. This activity may result from a lack of knowledge about certain fields of study or a desire to influence their children to follow plans that they have set up. Although many students do seek career advice and approval from their parents but they also believe that they have to make their own decisions. That is why some parents are upset if a child is not content with their choice and this create unnecessary parent and child conflict.<\/p>\n

When meeting with parents, I found that there were parents who have succeed in certain careers and wanted their children to follow that path. (Business owners want their children to follow their business). There were parents who admired certain careers and wanted their children to follow those. (They wish their children study Medicine, Dental, or Pharmacy etc.) There were parents who felt their children\u2019s career choice should be based on job market\u2019s demands, regardless of their interests and abilities.<\/p>\n

When meeting with students, I found that many had not explore all career possibilities. There were students who followed their friends\u2019 choices. (Their friends study literature, they also select literature). There were students who admired certain \u201cPublic personalities\u201d and wish that they could do the same. (Many select drama or music so they could become \u201cMovies stars\u201d or \u201cRock stars\u201d). There were students who felt their career choice should be based on job market\u2019s demand regardless of their abilities. (Many select computer field so they could be \u201cBill Gates\u201d).<\/p>\n

College is where students develop plans for their future and career exploration is critical. The issue is how active are students in exploring career options and how do they align their interests, their abilities into something meaningful. To do that students must be well informed of all options before making the decision. Students look careful into the job market as one of the key factor in their decision. Of course, market demands may change, and students\u2019 interests may also change.<\/p>\n

My advice is both parents and students need to consider three factors: interests, abilities and market demands before making decision. If the student is NOT interest in certain subject, they will not do it well. If student do NOT have the ability, they will NOT go far and may fail. If the degree they obtain is NOT in demand, they may NOT be able to find jobs. Since students must make a decision about what they will do after graduating from college, the discussion about career choice must be made BEFORE students enter college, or at least DURING the first college year.<\/p>\n

Most universities have career offices with career counselors. Career office is a place to go to learn about job skills, obtain career information and job counseling etc. I recommend that parents to contact the career office for information about certain field of study and attend career advising during orientation week to learn more about career opportunities for their children. With globalization, there are many changes in the job market, many new areas, and many opportunities that do not exist previously. In addition, career counselors could serve as an important link between parents and student in their college years.<\/p>\n

As career counselors encourage and support students\u2019 exploration of careers, parents should be considered as a partner in this process. Counselors can support parents to actively engage with their child\u2019s career planning in a positive manner. Parents should learn to separate their goals from their children\u2019s goals and avoid any unnecessary conflict by having career counselors act as a link between. Career counselors can offer solutions, explain to parents about career-related issues, and help parents to effectively discuss career choices with their children.<\/p>\n

By actively presenting current market information to parents, career counselors can assist parents in understanding the influence that they have, while at the same time educating them about various career options. For example, they can be informed of job trends in the global market, a forecast about what may happen in the future. Career centers could offer parent to obtain certain information where they can learn how to use some resources to help their child. For example, books or websites that contain career information.<\/p>\n

More than ever, when students begin exploring careers in college, the link between students, parents, and career centers is very important. Although it is possible to pursue a career that aligns with student\u2019s own interests and abilities, the job market plays a key role in the future of students. By selecting a combination of job market demands and student\u2019s interests and abilities, both parents and children can come up with a career plan in a positive manner. It is important to listen to each other \u2018s interests rather than a one way direction, where parents feel that their children is out of control, and students feel that their parents is acting like dictators.<\/p>\n

Despite some negative sentiments, I found that most students still seek parental advices and approval. Many students told me that making their parents happy and proud are their main goal in college. I believe that having career offices that inform parents about career information, current global market demands, and college\u2018s field of study options will help parents actually influence their children\u2019s career in a more positive manner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
