Creative Energy<\/p>\n

There are time when college students lose their motivations and do not feel that they want to study anymore. Class that was once fun suddenly become boring. Study goals that used to motivate them do not resonate anymore. Students begin to wonder whether college education is the right thing? Or whether they select the right careers? All their high hopes suddenly vanish like smoke as they are not sure about their future. It seems somehow they are all tired and lose their directions. They ponder how can they continue to study without motivations and enthusiasts. This is the symptom of \u201cCreative energy stress\u201d that often happens in the second and third year students, especially in computing or software students.<\/p>\n

What students need to realize is: This is a common problem, it comes and it will go. The cause of that is due to the depletion of \u201cCreative energy\u201d. Creative energy is something difficult to explain because it is a personal thing among people who has to do a lot of thinking and analyzing in their works, such as computer and mathematic students. (It also happens in artists, writers, musician who use their creative talents too). This symptom happens when students use up their creative energy beyond their capacity. Like a well of water, this energy replenishes itself slowly over time. A student who has pushed himself too hard in many late night studies, or have to design and code a complex program might use up all of his creative energy in a short time. Usually by that time, there is not much they can do. Their brain powers get into a \u201cfreeze state\u201d so they fall into a \u201cdepressing feeling\u201d where nothing seems to work, everything fall apart which resulting in panic, fear, self doubt, and losing faith in what they do.<\/p>\n

What happen to a well when it runs out of water? It will need time to fill again on its own. The same thing also happen to students who experience this symptom. I often advise students to talk to friends or a counselor to relieve their stress. If they can express their \u201cemptiness feeling\u201d, they will feel better. Of course in few days, attitude change will comes from within and they will feel better again. Just like water is slowly pouring in an empty well, when their brain power recovers, when their creative energies are full, things will come back normally.<\/p>\n

For many years of teaching software and mathematics students, I encountered students who have this symptom all the time. As long as students understand that it is only a temporary thing, it comes and it will go, there is no reason to be panic. Following are some advices that work well for many of my students:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take a day off. Go see a movie or go shopping. Have some friends to go along to cheer you up.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take a walk in a quiet garden or do some light exercise to relax the mind.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have a full night sleep (At least 8 hours)<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Eat nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables. Avoid meat and fishes for few days.<\/p>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Learn to meditate will also eliminate this stress.<\/p>\n

Students need time to allow their creative energy to build up so do not hurry to do something hastily. Do one task at a time to calm your mind. If needed, talk to your counselor and professors and let them know about your stress. Whatever you choose to deal with this situation, pay attention to your health. Ask yourself what works and does not work for you? What make you feel depress? What things seem to influence your motivation? Review your study schedule and make adjustment so you have time to rest. Cut down unnecessary activities so you can relax and replenish your creative energy.<\/p>\n

When you feel better, reevaluate and reset your study goals.\u00a0Do what means most to you. Self-set goals are better motivators than those imposed by others. Writing down you goals also help you to review your commitment. Study goals must be challenging but achievable. Good study goals are neither too easy nor impossible. \u00a0A challenging but achievable goals will hold your interest and keep you motivated in your study.<\/p>\n

Once you done this then you can look forward to reset your career goal. Do not set goal like “I will have a good paying job.” Or \u201cI will have job\u201d But ask yourself: What kind of job? Making how much money? In what industry? Where could I work? What city? What country? What are the requiring skills? What class should I take to learn those skills? If you clearly understand what you want and calmly put them in writing you will experience a surge in creative energy that heal you in a way that you cannot even imagine.<\/p>\n

Remember that as a growing person your needs will change over time, and this means your career goals will have to be modified, discarded and added from time to time. Plan you career for flexibly and you will achieve your enthusiastic, your motivation back.\u00a0The sooner you sit down and allow your creative energy to come out, the better you will be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
