I received an email where the sender wrote: \u201cI went to college three years ago but did not do well so I quit after one year. I took some programming courses and was able to work as a programmer. I want to move up to better positions but all the jobs that I want require more knowledge and skills than I have. Most require a college degree so I want to return to college but I am afraid of failure again? Do you have any advice?”<\/p>\n

Answer: It is possible that three years ago you were not ready for college. Maybe that situation has changed. It seems to me that you want to avoid any embarrassment of not succeed if you return to college. You need to know that any time you take risks, there will be some moments of embarrassment and uncomfortable. That is only a temporary feeling because there will be better opportunities in the future. If you go back to college, there will be time and classes where you are doing great but there will also time and classes where you not doing well. The best way is to put in the effort and do your best then you will never regret later that you do not try.<\/p>\n

The important question is not whether you can succeed or not but how much do you really want to move up to better positions and better paid career. If you can visualize the future that you want, then you can work backward to identify the needed steps to achieve that future. The focus is then on what you can get, NOT on whether you can do it or not. If you really want that job then you will find ways to get it.<\/p>\n

From what I know, all better positions, all better paid careers require a college degree as a minimum. Since you already have programming skills and experience, it is unlikely that you will have any difficulty in college. I would advise you to return to college with a new enthusiastic attitude and motivation because you already have a career goal. The only thing you will lose is your fear of failure.<\/p>\n
