Few days later, the test manager told me that it was rare for a developer to come to see them to learn about what they do. Usually developers do not talk to testers until they have problems. In a large software company, developers and testers are separate groups, locate in different buildings and unless they have to, they do not interact much. You can guess what happen when Nicole needs their help?<\/p>\n

Within a month in the project, we had a customer meeting where Nicole met several users. They talked about many things but I heard that she asked them whether she could visit their workplace and learned about how they work. Five days after that, she came to see me with a list of requirements that users really wanted but never documented in the software requirements specification (SRS). She told me that she had a discussion with the requirements engineer to review these new requirements and he agreed to have them added to the next software release. Few days later, the requirements engineer told me that he was impressed with her professional, and among graduates that we hired that year, she was the only one who could understand customer requirements well.<\/p>\n

During architecture phase, the chief architect told me that he needed an assistant since he was overwhelmed with works. I agreed and asked him who did he want to be his assistant. Without hesitation, he mentioned her name. I was surprised since architect works required many years of experiences and she was only a recent graduates. He explained: \u201cThat girl learned fast, she came to me several weeks ago with a lot of questions. For many years that I worked here, few people would ask me that kind of questions. That girl must have thought a lot about my architecture design and as we had several conversations afterward, each time she came up with more questions. I rarely seen someone who were so eager to learn like her.\u201d You can guess who became the chief architect assistant when other recent graduates were still learning about the project.<\/p>\n

By connecting with the test group, user group and the project chief architect, Nicole had built an excellent relationship with all key project members. Unlike other software developers who preferred to work alone, she understood that relationships was a key for her success. In doing so, she learned more about their works and their priorities. They become her friends and mentors, eager to teach her what she wanted to learn. Even today, I do not know how a recent young graduate can act so professional like that.<\/p>\n

Throughout the project, Nicole stood out as a leader. During design reviews with customers, she was well prepared and was able to answer many tough questions. She even volunteered to fix some design issues for others since she knew the architecture well. As a team member, she reported her weekly activities in a professional manner, clear and concise with data and date. Her team leader liked it so much that he asked all team members to follow her formatted status report. Most software developers are never good in documentation but her document was neat and very thorough. During code review, I was so glad that her code was well written with comments in every line of code. Several SQA people told me that they were impressed with the way she conducted in the project. She was always pleasant to talk to and ready to provide support to anyone who were in need.<\/p>\n

After the first software release, I gave the team a week to rest before starting the next phase. To my surprise, she came to me and asked whether she could attend a technical conference so she can learn a new software development method. Of course, I approved her request but what surprised me more was when returned, she gave me a full report about the conference. She also offered to share what she had learned with team members about the new software method. By the end of the project, I promoted her to team leader, even she was only worked for the company in less than two years.<\/p>\n

Few months after the project completed successfully, I was transferred to another division of the company in another city. The work was very busy so I did not know what happened to members of my old project team. One day I received a phone call from Nicole asking for advice because she wanted to go back to school for an advanced degree. Of course, I highly recommended her to go to CarnegieMelonUniversity and even wrote a letter of recommendation for her.<\/p>\n

Many years have passed, I was busy with my career and did not remember much about past projects. However, yesterday I found her picture on the front page of a technical magazine. She was working for another company, a large and fast growing software company as their vice president. The magazine had voted her as \u201cTechnical person of the year\u201d. For many years, that magazine always selected some\u00a0 people as the \u201cTechnical person of the year\u201d, among them were Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sergei Brin, Mark Zuckerberg etc. However, this year that person is a woman, and the first woman ever selected. I am sure in the future there will be more because today there are more woman studying in technical areas.
