An education debate<\/p>\n

Last week, the U.S Government published a research on the choice of study fields in U.S. college. It found that the choice of study is strongly tied to a student’s future earnings, with the highest-paying jobs providing salaries of about 300 percent more than the lowest-paying job. This research reviewed over 200 study fields that offered in most U.S. College and salaries when students graduated and found different fields lead to significantly different in salaries. According to this research, Petroleum engineering graduates make about $120,000 a year, compared with $29,000 annually for psychology graduates. Computer science and Information Technology graduates earn $98,000 in salary while education graduates get paid about $36,000 a year.<\/p>\n

The findings got a lot of discussions among students and their parents. Many newspapers and TV stations also conducted interviews on this subjects. One student told the local TV station: \u201cYou go to the same school, spend the same amount of tuition, and get a degree but someone is making four or five times than you, it is really unfair\u201d. Another student disagreed: \u201cIt is the students\u2019 choice on what to study, some select the easy field of study and make less. I think the best choice is the one that make the most money when graduate. It may be difficult, it may require more time to study but as long as it pays more then it worth it\u201d. Another student expressed his opinion to a newspaper: \u201cIt will be interesting to see in the next few years about the effects of this study on the choices of students entering college? From my experience a study like this will create a glut of graduates in the higher paying fields thereby lowering the earnings of those in that field. My guess is five years from now, the U.S. will have more petroleum and software engineers than psychology and education students then many may not make that much money\u201d. Another student agreed: \u201cSome fields are the best kept secret among few students. Now that everybody know. I am afraid more people will study computer and IT then bring down the salary\u201d. However, one senior student disagreed: \u201c Most higher paying fields are hard, many students do not have the discipline to pursue a degree that requires a lot of efforts. I have seen many students failed already so I do not worry too much. By the way, there is a shortage of several million engineers in the U.S alone so it would take at least ten to twenty more years for supply to catch up with demand\u201d.<\/p>\n

An academic professor was not too happy with the research results. He told a newspaper: \u201cThis research can create damage to our education system. Too often parents expect their children to graduate with certain skills to get jobs. College is about learning how to critically think, write and analyze. Education is about knowledge so they can apply to any profession not just to get high paid jobs. The philosophy classes that I teach in college may not apply to any jobs but it make my students to think more about life not jobs\u201d. The teacher union also voiced their view: \u201cWhen you tie education to earning, you lower the value of education. Parents should not send their children to college to get jobs. They should go to college to get an education. Consider the broad applications of the things that students are learning through those four years that allow them to do many things. They can lose their houses, their cars, and their money but nobody can take away their education\u201d.<\/p>\n

Many parents also voiced their opinions in newspapers. One mother said: \u201cOur family spent all our money to educate our children. It would be a disaster if they cannot get jobs. We need more information about the job market so we can advise our children on what to study. We do not want to have unemployed children in our house\u201d. \u00a0Another parents was angry: “We do not have a system in the U.S. where students align what they study with career prospects. Nobody ever tells them anything but allow them to go to college without clear direction. We have too much freedom of choice but some are stupid as we do not know what happened to students who cannot find jobs because they study the wrong things\u201d.<\/p>\n

Most U.S. newspapers do report about \u201cHot jobs and cold jobs\u201d each year. One journalist wrote: \u201cWe publish information about job market all the time. The issue is people do not read newspapers anymore. They are more interested in TV channels with sport events, movie stars affairs and movies but less on current issues\u201d. Accordingly, most newspaper also printed that this year (2011) Software engineering, computer science, information technology, petroleum engineer, networking\/telecommunication, business systems, and information system management are seven of the top 10 highest-paying majors in the U.S. The worst jobs with lowest salaries and most difficult to find jobs are: Banking and Investment, Insurance, public relation, and journalism.<\/p>\n

The research also found that men are concentrated in the highest-earning fields, including engineering and sciences, while women gravitate toward the lowest-earning fields like education, art and social work. The most popular field in college today isbusiness (finance and\u00a0accounting) with 25 percent of all students. The least popular are arts and agriculture, with 3 percent. Among college students, 75% of Asians study computers and mathematics. 62% of White students study business, management and natural science. 65% of Black students study public policy, government, laws and sports. According to the research, the average person changes careers three to five times in a lifetime so while salary is something students should be aware of, it should not be the only deciding factor as it is not the whole picture. Many students may have difficulty when graduate, some many not make a lot of money in the beginning but as they change jobs and some earn more overtime. Many opportunities and advancements may come in late as there is no guarantee on how much a person can make.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
