Toward a new area of Services<\/p>\n

This week (May 25, 2011) the G8 group (France, Germany, Italy, UK, U.S, Canada and Russia) meet in Paris. Beside issues such as politics, social, economic that they will discuss with each other, there is one additional item that few people pay attention. It is a small group called the e-G8 Forum, consists of a number of IT leaders who are also invited to participate. Why government leaders would meet with some IT leaders in a special G8 meeting? It never happened before so I think, as the G8 leaders discusses their future strategies, we can assume that IT will be a key important topic.<\/p>\n

Today, every aspect of developed countries is impacted by Information technology (IT). Many businesses are conducted using the internet and this \u201cInternet economic\u201d output is already bigger than the entire economy of Spain and growing faster than the economy of Brazil. Last week, Christine Lagarde, French finance minister, said that Information Technology (IT) will drive 5.5% future growth and help create additional million jobs in France. John Donahue, the CEO of eBay told newspapers that there are 1.3 million people make a living selling things in eBay and many of them already become millionaire. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, reported that her company has over 800 million users and each day add few hundred thousand more. According to her, within the next six months, half of people on earth will have Facebook accounts.<\/p>\n

According to the news report, in this G8 meeting the Internet was hailed as a major force that changes everything. French President Sarkozy, asked the e-G8 forum to provide recommendations to all the G8 heads of state to prepare for the upcoming changes. The agenda includes: Education improvement, Intellectual Property protection, Internet controlling against fraud, cybercrimes, pornography etc. and growing economies with IT services. The first three items does not surprise me but the fourth item: \u201cGrowing the economy with IT services\u201d is interesting, especially it is now being discussed by the G8 leaders.<\/p>\n

For years, I have written about the transition from product to services as software is becoming a \u201cservice\u201d and most future activities will be in the service area. I believe \u201cServices\u201d is the new key factor in today\u2019s economy. Few people know that services represent about 80% of the U.S GDP and about 60% of the G8 group\u2019s GDPs. Therefore, getting better at service management must be a priority. Big companies such as GE, IBM, Accenture, Xerox, HP, Microsoft, Google, Dell are all moving their businesses from products to services. With cloud computing, more services will be needed. However, today schools are still focusing on product-oriented technology but not on service management. In the software product area. 85% of business are controlled by IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP so there is not much left for anyone to move in, unless you can compete with these giants. Of course, some of you may disagree as there are Google, Apple, Facebook etc. These companies are growing fast, for example, Apple now is sell more products than Microsoft and Facebook is growing faster than any company in history. However, in business people do NOT look at how many things you sell or how fast you grow but how much profit you have, how much money you generate. Microsoft may sell less things than Apple but its profit is much higher than Apple and several times more than Google and Facebook have not make money at all. Consider that in shifting from products to services, a supplier does much more for customers because it allows the customer to off-load some works and thus focus more on the business. A Bank should focus more on money rather than the computer system, a automobile manufacture should focus more on create its cars than its IT systems etc. In the near future, many companies would probably do that, focus on the \u201ccore business\u201d and allow service providers to do their own services.<\/p>\n

So why do schools not consider services as a legitimate field of study? Why it is not taught as a new discipline in information technology area? Why do people not pay attention at service? Today there are only few people have become experts in \u201cService management\u201d, most has been learned from their own experiences in company operation rather than from schools. I think IT service management or information system management will be big. All the signs are promising as today many companies are moving to cloud computing. The issues are: Do they have enough skilled people who know how to manage IT services? Where can they find these people?
