Ng\u01b0\u1eddi ch\u00e2u \u00c1 ch\u01a1i nhi\u1ec1u videogames h\u01a1n b\u1ea5t k\u00ec n\u01b0\u1edbc n\u00e0o. Last week, Dr. Karl Helstrom a researcher shared with me his study on the reading habit of people who work in the software industry. He spent several years to conduct this study and had surveyed over ten thousand software people. What he found was very interesting so I like to share with you:<\/p>\n

According to the research, most American software developers read less than one technical book a year, (78% never finish the book that they bought). Even with many technical articles available on the internet, over 82% of them do not read them after they completed schools and had jobs. Many confessed that they only read when they have too, usually when they were order by their managers or when they have to go to additional technical trainings. It was not because they were busy and did not have time because 72% of them frequently read articles about sport events, movies stars or rock stars news and 63% of them also admitted that they play video games often (More than 10 hours a week). This lack of concern about upgrading their knowledge and skills may explain why there is a critical shortage of skilled software people in the U.S. but at the same time, there is a massive number of unemployed software people there.<\/p>\n

On the average, European software developers read three to five technical books a year to keep up. Among them, Scandinavian developers read the most (More than 5 technical books) and France and Italian developers read less (less than 2 books). Similar to American developers, 76% of them do not read additional technical articles on the internet or following technology trends. Many do not update their knowledge unless they have to. The survey also found 65% of them do read articles about sport events, movies stars, rock stars but not as often as the Americans. Only 40% of them admit of playing video games more than 10 hours a week. However, European developers spent more time in social activities such as parties, bars, coffee shops, dancing clubs etc. than American. Currently, Europe also has a shortage of skilled people and a large number of unemployed software workers.<\/p>\n

Asian developers are among the most avid readers. On the average, Asian developers read 8 to 15 technical books a year. Among them Japanese and S. Korean read the most (10 to 18 books), India and Singaporean (5 to 12 books). Chinese students also read more but there were limited technical books available in Chinese. Students in Beijing, Shanghai, and larger cities had more opportunities and better access to technical books than other cities. According to the research, more Chinese students went to the internet for technical articles but since most were written in English, and many did not have good English skill so they were at a disadvantage. The research also found that a majority of Asians (83%) follow technical news available on the internet on a frequent basis. Less than 32% of Asian developers follow news on sports, movies stars and rock stars but 85% of them do play video games \u2013 often more than 10 hours a week. Asians play more videogames than any country. When I visited Japan last year, a friend lamented: \u201cVideogames wasting time. Many games are extremely violent and promote sexual promiscuous but it seems no one can stop it\u201d.\u00a0 Another professor complained: \u201cMany students are addicted to videogames. If they just spend the same time on learning and innovate things, we could overpasses the U.S. by now\u201d.<\/p>\n

Today technology changes very fast and software industry is the most dynamic industry with new trends occur all the time. If software people do not want to get behind, they must keep up by read more technical books and articles. My advice for software students is you must make reading a habit, try to read as much as possible and make it an on-going basis as things that you read today will be obsolete within three to five years. You must remember that you are solely responsible for your own technical career, if you do not keep up, you will be left behind. In the highly competitive job market, knowledge and skills are the only things that keep you employed. Most companies will hire new employees with new skills then fire people with obsolete skills as they are no longer valuable. That is why the turn-over rate among software people is so much higher in some countries than others.<\/p>\n

There is an old saying: \u201cA good way to understand someone\u2019s personality is to look at the books that he or she read\u201d. I think we can change it to \u201cA good way to know the future of a software people is to look at how many articles that he or she read in the past few years\u201d. As software professionals, we all work in a field that changes often, by understand how things change, by anticipate the change, we can adjust our skills and improve our knowledge accordingly. With globalization, competition will put many software people out of work, just as few years ago Japanese competition put American\u2019s automobile workers and electronic workers out of work. Just as the automobile, electronics, steels, textiles, manufacturing industries were shocked and unprepared for their loss, I believe the software industry will also change quickly in the next few years however this time there will be no dominant country because with global development trends, skilled workers will come from all over the world. I am convinced that many people do not yet fully understand that with globalization, knowledge and skills are the key assets that determine the economic growth and prosperity of a country in the 21st<\/sup>\u00a0century. To improve this knowledge means people must read more, learn more, following technical trends more, as things are changing very quickly.<\/p>\n
