Difficult questions in Job Interview<\/p>\n

Graduating students often asked me: \u201cI thought that I did well in the job interview but I did not get the job. I answered all technical questions that they asked very well. I did not know why they did not hire me?\u201d I asked them: \u201cDid they ask you something else beside technical questions?\u201d Many hesitated and admitted that they were not prepared for these types of question and might not answer them well. These are common issues among technical students. They were so focusing on the technical aspect but ignored the behavior aspect of the interview.<\/p>\n

For several years, I have collected \u201cNon-technical interview questions\u201d that students often found difficult to answer to help them prepare. Following are five of them:<\/p>\n

1)<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0“Why do you want to work for our company?”<\/b><\/p>\n

To answer this question, you must know something about the company. Before the interview you must research about the company that you want to work for. Look over their websites, check their financial reports, follow their news, and \u201cGoogle\u201d to learn something about them. When asking, you can answer with confident about the company as you already knew something about them. You can answer that the company can provide you with a challenging work; the company has good reputation that you can build your career on etc. For example you can say:”I’m not looking for just a job. I want to build a career with a strong company like yours. Your company produces great products and has potential to grow. I share your company vision and if possible, I would like to be part of it.”<\/p>\n

2)<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0“What would you like to be doing five years from now?” or \u201cWhat is your long term career?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

This is the common question to separate candidates who just want a job and someone who want to build a career with the company. The best answer is that you want to be a professional where you can build your career. You may say that the first few years you want to learn about the business of the company so you can contribute then depend on what opportunities exist within the company you may get into more specific. For example: “From what you have told me about the potential, I want to start as a software developer; few years from now I like to move up to team leader position where I would lead a small team to develop product. In five or six years, I would like to get into a project manager position where I could contribute toward the company’s goals.”<\/p>\n

3)<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0“Tell me about yourself?”<\/b><\/p>\n

Many students considered this is a \u201ctrick question\u201d as some would spend a lot of time talking about themselves. Do NOT make that mistake. The interviewer is NOT interest in your personal life, about your family, or what you do. They only want to know how do you \u201cFit\u201d into the position that the company wants to fill. You need to think careful before giving an answer. I would recommend that you ask, “Is there any particular aspect of my background that you would like more information on?” This will force the interviewer to be specific and allows you time to focus and avoid discussing irrelevancies. It is important for you to mention about the job opening and the skills that they need. Whatever you say should refer to your skills and your personal traits such as being a team player. For example, “I like to work in team; I always get along with my team members. In the capstone project, I am a team leader where I get along well with my teammates, etc…\u201d This is not a question that you can quickly answer. Take some time to think about yourself, and those aspects of your life that you would like to share in the interviewer.<\/p>\n

4)<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0“What is the most difficult situation or problem that you have faced?”<\/b><\/p>\n

This is another difficult question that you must be careful to answer. You should NEVER talk about difficult problem with co-workers, with your manager, or with the professors. That will indicate that you are a negative person. You must have prepared a story where the situation was difficult but also allows you to demonstrate your ability to solve problem. For example, you may say: \u201cThe requirements for the capstone project were given to us by an outside company. They gave us six months to complete but when we were in the fourth month, they changed the requirements but did not give us extra time. We had to rework some designs to ensure that the software work well with new requirements. We worked long hours but in the end we succeed…etc. You can elaborate on the details if you want. Since this is a common issue in the industry, the interview would understand it well.<\/p>\n

5)<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Why should I hire you?<\/b><\/p>\n

The interviewer is interested in hiring you but he may want you to give him a confirmation so your answer should be short and concise. It should focus in the areas from your skills that relate to the job opening. You should using the description of the job and answer it clearly with your skills. For example you may say: \u201cYou need someone with C++ skills, I have taken 2 courses in C++ and scored A in both classes. My capstone project is also using C++ and I am the team leader who did most of the coding and testing. You need someone with a leadership skills, I am the leader of the Capstone project where I am responsible for both the technical and the overall project management etc. Then you may conclude with:\u00a0 “I have the knowledge and skills that you need, I believe that I qualify for the position that you have. I have the desire to build a strong career in software and I think your company is what I would like to build my career with.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
