Answer: The computer game industry is one of the fastest growing industry in the past ten years due to the growing popularity of high quality games. Today the U.S., Japan, and S. Korea dominate this industry with more games than any other countries. Game development is not as simple as many people think as it requires more skills than just programming skill. If you want to become a game developer, you must have passion for computer games because the work is very tedious and labor intensive. As a game developer, you should be ready to work for long hours (Average 60 hours per week in the U.S) and learn new technologies that can make game development process better and faster. Beside programming skills, you must have strong knowledge of graphic arts and extremely creative because it requires new ideas, new concepts and the ability to put yourself in the user\u2019s position so the game will ensure maximum user satisfaction.<\/p>\n

All computer game developments require programming skills. Today C and C++ are the languages for most game programming. Sometime, Java and Python programming languages are also used, but not often. Although some companies do hire people without a bachelor degree but the typical requirement is a degree in computer science or software engineering with a specialize in game development. Game development is always teamwork. Along with game designers, programmers, graphic artists, musicians and game testers are all important part of the game development process. Each game is considered a project and most companies usually hire game developers who have worked on a software project previously. The game company sets project target as of when a particular video game should be launched and hence game developers should be able to work in a competitive environment with very strict deadlines. Few years ago, computer games were not so sophisticated so a small team could do it and most games had about 100,000 to 500,000 lines of C or C++ code. Today, the computer games are much more complex with intensive graphics so each game may have several million lines of code.<\/p>\n

Most people start as game testers to get experience then move to game developers. Few people move up to game designers. Due to the extreme competitive nature, more people want to be game developers for fewer positions available so the salary of game developer is not as high as other position (Average U.S. game developer salary is between $70,000 to $90,000 a year).<\/p>\n
