Internet addiction<\/p>\n

Last week I found a study on university students and the internet media. In this study, thousands students were asked to abstain from all forms of internet media for one day. The result \u00a0was dramatic as 98% of them reported distress, isolation, confusion, and boredom. The research concluded that internet is an addiction even there is no medical evidence that it caused any physical harm.<\/p>\n

Research scientists spent several months travel to ten countries \u2013 The U.S, UK, Mexico, China, India, Japan, S. Korea, Brazil, Argentina, and Uganda to collect data in universities where students volunteer to participated by not using any form of internet media, such as email, websites, blogs, music, videogames, news, and cell phones for 24 hours.<\/p>\n

Students from China and the U.S. showed the highest percentage of feeling addicted. A student in China admitted: \u201cI do not know why I become so dependent on these things. When I was young, I did not have these things but I was also happy. Now, everything change as I am not happy anymore. If I cannot visit some websites, watch some news streaming on YouTube, talk to friends in chat room, I feel very depress\u201d. An U.S students agreed: \u201cI feel dead without the internet, it bothers me so much that I cannot function. I feel sick\u201d. Another student said: \u201cI cannot live without these media, I do not know what to do. I need all these things, I need to surf the web or access chat rooms and without these, I am in trouble. Life is so boring\u201d.<\/p>\n

Among students participated, Japanese and S. Korean students spent most time to play videogame online. Many could play several days nonstop, especially in the summer when they do not go to school. One student explained: \u201cIt is not the internet, it is the videogames. You do not understand how we play videogames, it is an obsession and unless you play, you will never understand us. I do not care about movies, music, or other things, I even do not care about my girlfriend when I play and I am not the only one. Most of my friends are the same. When we play, everything is no longer important\u201d. On-line computer games is a very big business in these countries and that is why both Japan and S. Korea have several treatment centers for videogames addiction.<\/p>\n

Among participants, Indian students use internet media mostly for searching news and information. Many use it to learn new things and update their skills. One student said: \u201cYes, we know that we should not spend too much time on the internet but there are so many interesting websites with valuable information that we could not find in our country. We can access several free online universities and textbooks, several websites for technical instructions. Today we do not read newspapers but news come to us via Twitter, Facebook, Web sidebars, emails. Some news were sent directly to our iPhone, iPads so we always stay connected with the world and we need all of it\u201d.<\/p>\n

Brazil and Argentina students have the highest percentage on the feeling of isolation and many failed completely. After just 16 hours, over 60% abandoned the experiment and start access the internet. One students said: \u201cI feel completely isolated with the world without the internet. I need to talk to somebody, if not in chat room then over my cell phone or reading forum where people share information\u201d. Ugandan students were the best able to go along with the experiment and have no problem without the internet. Many of them said that they always have something else to do.<\/p>\n

It is no surprise students feel conflicted about the dependence on these media. Most agreed that there are other joys in life besides media, yet most cannot get through a single day without feeling distress over being disconnected. As whether the internet media addiction is real or not, the researchers stated that they are not medical doctors or healthcare professionals but they found that most students reported not only craving mentally for information but also physically craving for their devices such as laptops, iPhone, iPads, cell phones etc. The medical profession is still debating whether such thing like the internet could be an addiction.<\/p>\n
