CMU space Craft<\/p>\n

Carnegie Mellon researchers have completed structural assembly of the lunar landing craft that will deliver the Red Rover robot to the moon in 2014. The half-ton aluminum structure will be shipped to Boeing Co. facilities in California, for testing to confirm its soundness and its compatibility with the Space X Falcon 9 launch vehicle.<\/p>\n

The plan is to land the spacecraft, carrying both the robot and a commercial payload, on the moon next to a recently discovered tunnel leading down into a volcanic cave. The solar-powered Red Rover will broadcast high-definition video to Earth as the four-wheeled robot explores the moon. The \u00a0aims to claim the $36 million awards from the Google Lunar X Prize competition for the first private team to send a robot to the moon, travel 500 meters and transmit video, images and data back to Earth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis lunar space craft will be a key part of our initial moon mission and we expect to re-use this design for a series of missions that will establish our education in space technology as an ongoing, exploration program. It\u2019s an amazing piece of technology and it\u2019s gratifying to know that so much of it was invented here by our students at CMU.\u201d said William \u201cRed\u201d Whittaker, CMU professor of robotics. \u201c<\/p>\n
