Teachers and Students<\/p>\n

Today college students have so many things that can distract them from their study. Videogames, chat rooms, websites, text messages, cell phones etc. To motivate them to study in this environment is very difficult.<\/p>\n

Because of these distractions, some students do not pay attention to class assignments or participate in class discussions and therefore not learn much in class. If this situation continues, many may not be able to finish college. When entering college, many students do not know what to do or why they should do it. It is crucial for professors to spend more time explaining why certain subject is important to motivate them instead of just teaching the materials. Students who do not know what to do and why they must do it will tend to do poorly and easily get disappointed. Traditional education approach tends to punish poorly learning students rather encourage them. It is understandable, as it is based on the selection process with examinations to identify best students to be scholars or officials for the emperor. Today modern education approach is not about selecting few best students but develop a large number of skilled workers to support the industries and the country\u2019s economy. Therefore, education must change to give more access to its citizens and encourage lifelong learning. The fundamental concept is not about how much students learn but \u201chow to learn\u201d in order to develop good learning habit.<\/p>\n

Many students, especially in the first year, are not yet know how to develop good learning habit. They are still immature and need encouragement rather than punishment. Rather than criticizing them for wrong answers, it is important to explain why the answer is not correct and allow them to correct it. Students will learn from mistakes if they are encouraged to learn as people will repeat behavior that is rewarded. Even at college level, professors should give verbal praise for good work such as “Good Job” or \u201cWell Done\u201d or write it on assignments to encourage students. It may be a simple thing but everybody likes the feeling of accomplishment and recognition.<\/p>\n

One of the keys to motivate students is encourage them to actively involved in class. The traditional method of standing in front of the class and talk to them is no longer effective, especially when students\u2019 motivation is not at their best. It is better to get them involved in group discussions, group problem solving exercises, let them exchange information with each other so they can develop teamwork skill rather than individual learning. I often give each group a topic, ask them to do research using the internet, collect information then spend ten minutes to explain it to the class. In that case, students learn about \u00a0research early in their first college years. They learn that there are many different opinions and views expressed by different authors, not necessary what mentioned in the text books. They learn to identify vital information and learn presentation skill as they explain them in class.<\/p>\n

Learning is a discovering process. I like to ask students\u2019 opinion on certain subjects by first give them some examples then ask them to analyze, generalize then draw the conclusions themselves. To begin with questions, examples, evidences, stories, and news, I let them discuss among themselves then come up with their own conclusions. By doing that, I can maintain their interest and motivation in the same time teach them the skills of analysis, synthesis and independent thinking. For example, I often ask them to prepare a short presentation on \u201cwhy do you think information technology is hot today?\u201d, \u201cWhat do you think the next technology would be?\u201d, \u201cWhy the world is flat?\u201d etc. They have to spend time to discuss among themselves and\u00a0 conduct research before they can give the answer in the next class.<\/p>\n

Most college students do not like final exam. I often give them two choices among three: To write three individual papers on given topics; to give five presentations in class as a group; or to take the final exam. Guess what they choose? In many years of teaching, few students would select to take the final exam. Of course, they still have to take short weekly test to ensure that they are learning. Students will commit to a learning activity that has value for them. If you explain that giving presentation in class is about developing \u201cSoft skills\u201d, learning \u201cResearch skill\u201d, building \u201cAnalytical skills and confidence\u201d then they can see that activity is something that they need to prepare for their career. In that case, they will put more efforts as it is something that meets their needs.<\/p>\n

Students respond positively to professors who are caring and often avoid \u201cauthority\u201d person. Today professors should not be an \u201cAuthoritarian judge\u201d that can punish them but a \u201cPartners\u201d who can help them in their learning process. It means that professors should be \u201capproachable\u201d to show that they care for their students. Professors should address their\u00a0 concerns about students\u2019 study goals, what do they plan for their future, what things do they like to do in life, etc. Such a professor will be trusted and respected more than one who is only focusing on teaching.<\/p>\n
