CMU in the News<\/p>\n

Tomorrow, Friday, June 24, President Barack Obama will visit Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he will highlight the importance of manufacturing to the U.S. economy. He will also discuss key steps that government, industry and universities will work together to create new industries and new jobs for the U.S.<\/p>\n

The visit comes as the success of CMU’s excellent education system that already achieved impressive record of turning innovations into new businesses and create jobs for the U.S. economy.<\/p>\n

President Obama’s remarks are expected to include the need to focus on cross-cutting technologies such as robotics and biotechnology that will enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. and speed up ideas from the drawing board to the manufacturing industry. The visit will take place at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics center where few days ago, CMU researchers had completed the building of the lunar landing craft that will land on the moon in 2014. President Obama will see a range of cutting-edge technologies from space vehicles and next-generation robots that have the potential to transform the U.S manufacturing sector to faster, better and cheaper in developing U.S. products.<\/p>\n

This is his third visit to the university in two years, as he considers CMU the model for U.S university to move forward into the future. Last year, he took several countries leaders to CMU to show them the best of U.S. education. He said: \u201cIn a global economy,\u00a0the U.S. has one asset that has yet to be duplicated anywhere else: The ability to turn university innovations into high-growth companies. That is what CarnegieMellonUniversity symbolize.\u201d<\/p>\n

CMU ranks first among all U.S. universities in the number of startup companies created since 2007, according to the Association of University Technology Managers. On the average, CMU’s professors and students create 15-20 new companies each year. CMU drives innovation that spurs economic growth and helped to develop more than 300 companies and 9,000 jobs in the past 15 years. Top companies such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, IBM, Disney, Intel all have offices on campus to recruit CMU students, before they even graduate. Few years ago, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates has funded the large building for the school of Computer Science. After that, Google also funded the building of a large research center to promote entrepreneur trainings.<\/p>\n

Universities across the U.S. and several countries have begun adopting CMU’s approach in education to train more skilled people and foster economic growth.<\/p>\n
