Th\u1ecb tr\u01b0\u1eddng CNTT \u1edf Trung \u0110\u00f4ng l\u00e0 r\u1ea5t tri\u1ec3n v\u1ecdng v\u00e0 c\u00f3 nhi\u1ec1u c\u01a1 h\u1ed9i t\u1ed1t cho t\u0103ng tr\u01b0\u1edfng v\u00ec c\u00f3 nhi\u1ec1u ti\u1ec1m n\u0103ng trong khu v\u1ef1c n\u00e0y.\u00a0L\u00e0 ng\u01b0\u1eddi qu\u1ea3n l\u00ed, vi\u1ec7c c\u1ee7a em \u0111\u01b0a em t\u1edbi nhi\u1ec1u n\u01b0\u1edbc trong v\u00f9ng. T\u1eeb quan \u0111i\u1ec3m k\u0129 thu\u1eadt, th\u1ebf gi\u1edbi th\u1ef1c s\u1ef1 l\u00e0 m\u1ed9t ch\u1ed7 nh\u1ecf, hay “Th\u1ebf gi\u1edbi ph\u1eb3ng”.\u00a0M\u1ecdi \u0111i\u1ec1u k\u0129 thu\u1eadt nh\u01b0 ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ph\u00e1p ph\u00e1t tri\u1ec3n, gi\u1ea3i ph\u00e1p, k\u1ebft c\u1ea5u n\u1ec1n m\u1ea1ng, thi\u1ebft l\u1eadp an ninh, v.v, d\u01b0\u1eddng nh\u01b0 l\u00e0 nh\u01b0 nhau \u1edf m\u1ecdi n\u01a1i. Letter from Turkey<\/p>\n

Last week I received an email from a former student so I like to share with you:<\/p>\n

Dear Professor,<\/p>\n

After six\u00a0years working for a software company in the U.S, I found a new\u00a0job as a\u00a0manager for\u00a0a\u00a0software company\u00a0in Turkey. My responsibility is\u00a0to help manage\u00a0the company\u00a0and\u00a0expand the business\u00a0in both the local and regional markets. My new\u00a0company\u00a0had about three hundred employees, their main work consisted of: Computer\u00a0repairs,\u00a0develop software for local uses such as create websites, manage small e-business,\u00a0install commercial off the shelf softwares, set up wireless and wired network\u00a0for other companies and provide additional information technology (IT) supports.\u00a0My new company\u00a0is\u00a0small, compare with company in the U.S but they want\u00a0to play a bigger role in the regional market. The\u00a0IT market in the Middle East is very promising and there are many\u00a0good opportunities\u00a0for growth because there are lot of potential\u00a0in this area.\u00a0As a\u00a0manager, my job took me to many countries in the region.\u00a0In my traveling, I\u00a0noticed few\u00a0things that I want to share with you and CMU students:<\/p>\n

From the technical\u00a0view, the world is really\u00a0one small place, or “The Flat World”.\u00a0All the technical things such as\u00a0development\u00a0methods, solutions, network infrastructure, security setup, etc, seem to be identical everywhere. Most companies\u00a0use the same products that we used in the U.S. With my education and software experience, I have no problem at all.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0from the management point of view, things are\u00a0different.\u00a0Each country has its own style of\u00a0management and very different thinkings.\u00a0Although we are in\u00a0a “Flat word” technically, but we are still far away from\u00a0management style. The issues here are\u00a0the lack of new thinking, new ideas, and new learning. Most\u00a0managers here are\u00a0fifty or sixty years old and they come from a world that is very different from the world that I come from. They live in the past, they often talk about their accomplishments and how they get to their positions. They do not know much about what happen outside their “Comfortable zones” or maybe they do not care.\u00a0They do not like to make quick decision but spend more time to think about it, basically they do not think but\u00a0delay it as long as possible. They do not want to see things out of control, they do not want to see changes, they just enjoy what they have and not pay attention to anything, as long as it does not impact them. They spend more time in meetings but rarely come up with any decision. \u00a0It seems that things change very slowly in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

As you always ask us\u00a0to share experiences with other CMU students, so here are some of my advices: “In the future, many of you will work on\u00a0global project or\u00a0for foreign companies,\u00a0your CMU education\u00a0will be your key assets.\u00a0If your work takes you around the world than\u00a0keep these things in mind: In many\u00a0countries, nothing happens on time or within budget. Managers in the US often complain about projects running out of schedule or over budget but\u00a0when you are working at global level, the problem may even get worse so always keep that in mind. Many people that you meet\u00a0have\u00a0different views than yours.\u00a0It may create a lot of frustration and misunderstanding, so always be prepared to expect less than what you have planned for. Many places are not so effective and efficient and there are\u00a0many opportunities to improve but you must be patient.\u00a0You will find\u00a0younger people\u00a0eager to know more\u00a0and willing to learn so\u00a0spend\u00a0time with\u00a0them since\u00a0they will be your best helpers. You will also find older people who want things to remain the same\u00a0so you must be\u00a0patient with them too. In many\u00a0countries, bureaucracy is well rooted in the system and things move much\u00a0slower\u00a0than what you expected.<\/p>\n

Management is not technical but mostly\u00a0soft-skill, so take time to improve your communication skill, presentation skill, interaction skill, and most of all, take time to read more and learn more about other cultures. When you are\u00a0working thousands of miles away from home, seize\u00a0the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy their friendships. Most people do speak English but if you learn few sentences in their languages it would be better. They always appreciate that. I found people in the Middle East very friendly and even more friendlier than the U.S. They\u00a0would invite you to their\u00a0home and feed you a lot of\u00a0foods. By the way, people\u00a0in this areas know how to party and their party is\u00a0different from the U.S. it lasts at least a whole day with a lot of foods and music. One thing very common is about music which is universal. You can find people in Turkey, Jordan, listen to rock and roll such as U2, Lady Gaga,\u00a0or Beyonce as well as other music from India.<\/p>\n

Theses are\u00a0things that I learned\u00a0and I thought it would be helpful for students in your class.\u00a0I am sure other students may\u00a0experience something\u00a0differ from mine.\u00a0One thing I am sure is the world is getting smaller and smaller, as time goes by and someday we all enjoy\u00a0this “Flat world” together.<\/p>\n
