Technical skills are not enough<\/p>\n

While your technical skills may get you a job but your soft-skills will advance your career. Your work ethic, your positive attitude, your communication skills, your problem solving skills, your interaction skills, your teamwork skills and your leadership skills are the soft skills that are essential for your career success. Many software developers often ask themselves why after several years of working they still stay in the same position when other are moving to better positions. The answer is probably that they have better soft-skills in addition to their technical skills.<\/p>\n

Today companies expect students to have both technical and soft-skills when they graduate. The problem is few students are aware of soft-skills, some even do not know what they are. That is why many are having difficulty when apply for jobs or during job interview. Students often ask: \u201cWhere do I learn these skills? Why does my school not teaching them? I do not know that some soft-skills are build-in into the training programs but sometime professors do not explain them clearly. Soft-skills can also be self taught if students are aware of them and make efforts to learn them themselves. Soft-skills are also often mentioned in books, especially in \u201cSelf-improvement\u201d books such as \u201cHow to win friends and influence people\u201d of Dale Carnegie. I know that today, students do not like to read books but if there is one book that they should read than I think Dale Carnegie\u2019s book should be the one.<\/p>\n

Today the workplace is a dynamic environment where people from diverse backgrounds and skills are working together. The skills of listening, presenting ideas, resolving conflict, and fostering an open and honest work environment depend on how people build and maintain relationships with each other. It is those relationships that allow people to participate in team projects, collaborate with each other and working toward common goals. If you have good technical skills but not soft skills, you will have difficulty as you will not be able to use your technical expertise to the full advantage. If you cannot get the maximum advantage on the strength of your knowledge, then you should review your communication and interpersonal skills. You should ask yourself about your roles (What do I do?), your responsibilities (What are my personal accountability), your teamwork attitude (How do I collaborate with my team and how do I solve conflict with other members?), your level of communication (How often I share information and interact with team members?) and your helpfulness (How do I help and support others?).<\/p>\n

The more you think on these things, the better you know about your soft skills. By knowing your strengths and weaknesses, you can develop or improve your soft-skill to the full potential. \u00a0This will influence your attitude when you interact with users, customers, team members, managers, and other people. Some students asked me: \u201cWe live in a competitive world, if I help others than they could advance better than me. What happen if I share my information with them but they did not share anything with me? My answer is: \u201cYou should not worry too much about someone who may get ahead of you. Only people who has knowledge can share their knowledge. People who hide things from team members are often very insecure and afraid, because inside them, they do not have much to share. Helping one another is important since you all working together in the same project, and you want your project to be successful. If you help someone, without any motives other than to see them get through their problems, you will understand the phrase \u201cliving is helping\u201d as it will enrich your life. Nothing gives better satisfaction, meaning and happiness than sincerely helping another person and seeing the impact it has on their lives. Today so many people are blinded by ambitions, they want to get ahead, to succeed only by themselves. However, most of them will not go far in their career because without teamwork skills, they will not succeed. Eventually the team will recognize that bad attitude and that selfishness and they will have to take action such as eliminate that person from the team. The team cannot succeed if its members to not play by the rule or do not work together. That is why so many software project failed. Let \u2018s imagine a scenario that a developer worked on several projects and they all failed. What kind of experience that person learn from that? People who work on failed projects may carry with them a failure attitude and probably not learn anything. They will continue to work with that selfish attitude and always keep thing for themselves because they want to be the hero, \u201cthe only hero\u201d. How long do you think that type of person will survive in an industry where teamwork is critical? It is not important how big or how small the helping is, when you help others and contribute to the team the best you can, you will get the recognition, sooner or later. Helping is a two ways street. You help other and receive help from others too. Nobody know everything so allow others to help you, just the same as you want others to let you to help them.<\/p>\n

As a software developer, you need to know that it is not enough to be good at technical skills. You do need the soft-skills that help all team members to communicate and collaborate effectively.<\/p>\n
