The story of Dr. Thompson<\/p>\n

Last week Dr. Thompson, a famous brain surgeon came to Carnegie Mellon to review brain surgery techniques that our research team is designing a robot to do that. There are certain places in the brain that is difficult to get to, even a small mistake can be fatal so brain surgeons want to build robot to do it accurately that they can operate in the hospital. After the meeting, we had dinner together and he told me about his life that I like to share with you.<\/p>\n

Dr. Thompson was born in a very poor section of Harlem, New York. His father left his mother when he was only two years old so his mother had to take care of three children by herself. Being black and lived in a slum, his future seemed to be bleak. He said: \u201cDespite being very poor, my mother worked two jobs to raise her children and made sure that we had a good education. When I was in elementary school, I was not good at learning and was often mocked by other children. I thought that I was stupid but my mother did not let it happened to me. She began to tutor me every night and limited my television watching to two hours per week. When I was in third grade, my mother wanted all of us to go to the library to read books then we had to write reports to her about all books that we read each week. Her minimum was two books a week and if I read more than five books, I was rewarded with TV watching. The reading and writing not only helped me to learn more but it became a lifelong habit\u201d.<\/p>\n

He lamented: \u201cToday children do not read books anymore but watch television and play video games. That is a big mistake. Most videogames and TV shows are entertainment not education. They make children become more lazy, not develop good study habit. Without good reading habit they will not be able to succeed in college and later in life. For many years, I thought that I was stupid but then suddenly I found out that I am smart, as I know much more than most of my friends in school. It is like winning a big lottery. Since then my life changed and I rose from the bottom of the class to the top in both elementary school and high school. I do not know anything that can help people better than reading. There are so many good books in the library, from history to science, from arts to philosophy and they enrich your life in so many ways. I do not know why parents do not encourage their children to read more?\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained his career: \u201cI hated poverty, life in the slum was very bad. You could became a criminal or a victim but there was a way out. It became clear to me that poverty was a choice but many people did not realize that. \u201cNot choosing poverty\u201d was also a choice so I decided to work very hard to overcome it. I graduated with honor from high school and got a scholarship to Carnegie Mellon to study engineering. After I got the engineering degree, I applied to medical school at John Hopkins, the top medical school in the U.S. When I was young, I read so many stories about medicine and I was very interested to became a doctor. It was not easy to get accepted to medical school, but I did not allow any obstacle to get in my way. I wanted to go not just any medical school but the top school. Since I graduated with honor at Carnegie Mellon, I had no problem with my application at John Hopkins. I became a medical doctor but I wanted to specialize in a particular field. In the early 1970, there were very few black doctors who went to specialized field but I chose Neurosurgery. After several years of practice, I became the head of neurosurgery department in a Pennsylvania hospital\u201d.<\/p>\n

He smiled: \u201cYou may not expect this success story from someone who grew up in poverty and lived in a slum but my mother never allowed us to be victims of poverty. As I looked back, I attributed everything to her encouraging us to read and write. Because of that, when I was at Carnegie Mellon, I had no problem reading all required assignments. Study was much easier when you can read, analyzed everything then wrote reports to summarize what you learned in just few days. Later in medical school, there were much more readings but I had no problem when others were struggled. Eventually I graduated with honor and became a top brain surgeon. In the past thirty years, I have operated on thousand patients and train hundreds of other surgeons but my passion for reading never change. I continued to read more and it continued to enrich my life\u201d.<\/p>\n

Dr. Thompson did more than just providing brain surgery. He combined his engineering skills and medical training and invented several new surgery techniques that helped cure many patients. For many years he thought about some precise way of removing infected tissues of the brain that a human hands cannot get to. He dreamed about create a small robot that could enter the brain and perform this task and that took him back to his old school: Carnegie Mellon. He told me: \u201cOur university is very well known throughout the world about robots. We created all kinds of robot, from robots that went to Mars and robots that drove cars from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Why not a robot that can do brain surgery or heart surgery? Today Biotechnology has changed the way we do thing so having robotic technology to be used in medical field is the right thing to focusing on. I think Biotechnology field will be big. Much bigger than software or hardware because it serves our needs, the need to live a healthy life. By having the best of both fields, computer and medicine, the future of Biotechnology will benefit all humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n

His idea was welcomed at Carnegie Mellon. In the past few years we have been working hard to make his dream come true. Today the \u201csurgeon robot\u201d is in the prototype phase but we believe within the next few years, we could begin to use in hospital. When I asked him if he had some advices to my students, he said: \u201c Students must read more books and stop wasting time on TV or video games. They must think about what they can do with their knowledge. They must think about what they can do for themselves and their family. They must think about how to make their lives more meaningful. They must think about what they can do to help other people. Their brain are so precious to waste on trivial things, make them use their brain for something meaningful\u201d.<\/p>\n

He suddenly stopped and asked me: \u201cHave you read any good book lately?\u201d<\/p>\n
