    Yesterday I received an email where the sender wrote: \u201cI am a third year computer student working part time for a software company. The company does not pay much but I need the work to pay for college and help my parents. Recently a manager of a competitor company contacted me personally and wanted to hire me. He asked me if I would be willing to give him financial information of my company, list of names of customers, and some details of our projects. He also asked me to recruit few other workers to work for him. The pay would be much better and I will have a full time job after graduate. I do need money but feel uncomfortable, and do not know what to do? What you would recommend.”<\/p>\n

    Answer: What other company asked you to do is clearly unethical. He asked you to help his company to steal business away from your company (list of customers, financial information, project details). This is unfair competition and completely unacceptable. It could be a cause for dismissal if your company finds out. It seems the other company does not do well so they have to compete by stealing things from others. While I understand you need money to pay for college and helping your parents, I do not think you should do it. It is completely wrong, people who make unethical choices usually do not escape the laws. Even you may succeed if nobody know but you cannot avoid your own conscience. As student, you have a bright future ahead and your conscience is pure. Do not let anything tarnish it.<\/p>\n

    As future software professional , you must commit to follow the \u201cCode of conduct\u201d,\u00a0if you do what the other company asked, how many principle that you will violate?<\/p>\n

    2. Software engineers shall act in a manner that is in the best interests of their customer and employer consistent with the public interest.<\/li>\n

    5. Software engineering managers and leaders shall subscribe to and promote an ethical approach to the management of software development and maintenance.<\/li>\n
    6. Software engineers shall advance the integrity and reputation of the profession consistent with the public interest.<\/li>\n
    7. Software engineers shall be fair to and supportive of their colleagues.<\/li>\n
    8. Software engineers shall participate in lifelong learning regarding the practice of their profession and shall promote an ethical approach to the practice of the profession.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Please consider this: What do you think your parents will do if they find out that you help someone to steal business from your company? Is your family\u2019s honor less valuable than a sum of money that you gain? Would you let your parents feel shame about an unethical son? Even you are not a full time employee but you do have a duty and relationship with your current employer. You cannot compromise ethically and expect to keep a job for long. If you violate a trust that your company has with you, people may find out and word gets out that you are not a trustworthy person then what will be your future?<\/p>\n

      By the way, do you think the other company will hire you knowing that you are not a trustworthy person? What you can do to your current company, you could do to them too. Do not be confused by certain promise or monetary reward that bring you down to the mud with them. If you help them, you are also accepting the risk that your company may find out an take legal issue toward you. This risk is also magnified by recruiting others to join you to work for others. My advice: Do NOT do it! Never do anything that compromise your own integrity. Never do anything that make your parents feel bad. If needed, let your current company know about the situation and let them deal with the other unethical company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
