What I learned from my Parents<\/p>\n

Dear professor,<\/p>\n

I did not forget your request of sharing work experience with current students. However everything that I do in the software industry, I learned from my parents. Here is my story:<\/p>\n

My parents own a restaurant in Vermont. Since I was young, I learned about restaurant business. My father taught me to bake bread when I was ten years old. Since then I had to get up early every morning to help him making bread. My mother taught me to cook and I often supported her whenever she needed me in the kitchen. During lunch and dinner, I worked both as a dishwasher and waiter. Weekends were always busy but we were happy because our business went well. Things always slowdown on the first few days of the week so I had more time to study. I often brought my laptop to a corner in the restaurant to do homeworks. In the summer, the restaurant were always busy, we worked\u00a0 from early morning until late at night. My parents had to hire additional people, most were local students working for extra money.<\/p>\n

When I left home to go to Carnegie Mellon, I often wondered whether I should be a software engineer or make the restaurant my career. Throughout the time when I was in college, I made frequent trips back home to help the restaurant. Now I look back on those two years with fondness and realize that it was a great lesson on running a business. I draw direct parallels from restaurant business to the software business. I can say that everything I do, I learned from my parents.<\/p>\n

After graduated, I worked as software developer in Boston for five years. I learned enough to start my own company specialize in providing payroll and accounting services to small companies. This is a \u201cniche\u201d that most people do not pay attention. Big companies with thousands of employees can afford to have their own accounting department but small companies with five to twenty employees cannot afford that so the owner have to handle all paper works for payroll and accounting. This is where I make it easier for them to do that by using my software product. Few years later, I expanded my business to web services, providing websites for these companies as more people now search the internet for information.<\/p>\n

I learned this \u201cNiche\u201d from my parents. Most people chose to open restaurants in the central of the city where there were many people but also many competing restaurants. My parents selected a location in a remote area, next to a park where there was no nearby restaurant. People who visit the park would go to our restaurant for convenience, as there is no other choice unless they want to drive another half an hour to go back to the city. After several hours of walking in the park and enjoy nature, most people are hungry so they would not want to go far. That is my parents\u2019 niche. Most software companies would create products to medium sized or large companies but there are many competing products. I decide to build \u201cCustomized\u201d software for small companies where no one pays attention. Since every small business owners have their own way of doing things, I customized the software to meet their needs. Once they get used to my software, they do not buy it from somebody else. That is my niche.<\/p>\n

There are always competitions among restaurants for customers. To stay competitive, my parents often change menu items according to the season and availability. In the summer when fishing is good, we add more fish and shrimp dishes. In the winter, due to the cold weather, there is not much fishing so we change menus to add more beef and pork dishes. The same thing happens in software industry as competition is more fierce due to changing technology. As a company owner, I also have to adjust my business according to market demands. When I started, most people used ledger for payroll and accounting where entry was written by hands. I automate them using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and build customized applications for their PC so they can enter data by keyboards. As the internet usage is growing, I expand my business to create websites for these small companies. Since they know me well, they trust me to build websites for them.<\/p>\n

As small restaurant owners, my parents not only kept track of the number of customers but also who they are and what they like. Since we live in a small town, most frequent customers are local people, this is not difficult. My father always talk with them about the weather, sport events, and what is happening in the outside world that he watched on TV. As a business owner, I also keep track of my customers and often meet with them to understand their needs. I always advise them on how to improve their business using technology. In this case, soft-skills such as communication, listening, negotiating are essential. If my father know how to talk with customers, so do I. I learned that customer relationship is the most important thing in any business.<\/p>\n

As small restaurant owners, my parents have to do business with fishermen, butchers, farmers for their products. My father always make sure that we can have the freshest fishes, the best meats and the freshest vegetables so we can have distinction menus. To do that, he have to build good relationship with these people and often offer them free dinners when they come in. I also have to build good relationship with small company owners. I have to make sure that they are pleased with the products and services that my company provided. I provide free advising for them on how to advertise their businesses and how to grow their business bigger. All of this helped them to understand more about the market and what I am doing and how I could help them. When customers came in, my father not just gave them the menu and wait for them to order but also told them about today\u2019s special such as new shrimp dish or fresh fishes just came in from the fisherman boats. I also learn to let customers know that beside payroll, accounting products, I also build websites, advertising on the internet and set their websites up to get more people to go there.<\/p>\n

I learned everything from my parents that the ultimate business success is to make your customers happy. My parents always want customers to leave with a smile because they knew they would be back. That lesson is also apply to my software business. Today, so many software people learn about technology but not relationship. Even they build sophisticated products but still not do well in the market because they do not understand that customers\u2019 satisfaction is everything. Customers do have choices on who they want to do business with. That is why my small company is doing very well and keep growing when many bigger and larger companies failed.<\/p>\n
