According to Forbes Magazine, today the world has 1,210 billionaires. For many years, the magazine published the list of millionaires but recently there were too many of them so they move up and only count the billionaires. Based on this year list, it is likely that they may change to multi-billionaires (More than 10 billions) as a minimum soon.<\/p>\n

From the list, The U.S has the most number of billionaires (Total 469). Russia is second (Total 87). China has doubled its number of billionaires in just two years (Total 45). India is the fourth (Total 42). The top of list of the richest people are unchanged: # 1: Carlos Slim (TelMex), # 2: Bill Gates (Microsoft), # 3: Warren Buffett (Berkshire Hathaway), and # 4: Larry Ellison (Oracles). There are several very young people joining the billionaire list including Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Sergey Brin (Google) Larry Page (Google), Dustin Moskovitz (Facebook), and Eduardo Saverin (Facebook).<\/p>\n

The fact is each year, more and more billionaires came from the technology sector than ever before. Today Zuckerberg is the third richest technology people in the world, behind Bill Gates and Larry Ellison. He is richer than other technology billionaires such as Steve Jobs, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Steve Ballmer. Some analysts predict that Facebook will start to sell stocks next year with a valuation worth more than $100 billion. If it happens, it will make Zuckerberg even richer than Bill Gates. As the news spread, more workers from Microsoft and Google are rushing to work for Facebook in anticipate of getting richer via stock options. To counter the \u201cExodus\u201d, Google immediately raises salary of everyone in the company. Due to their successes, fast growing software companies like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are continuing to hire thousands of people, create a shortage of software developers in the U.S.<\/p>\n

When goes below the technology billionaires into the millionaires then India and China top the list. The study found millionaire population growth in both India and China is rapidly outpacing the U.S and Europe.\u00a0China has the total of 415,000 millionaires. India has the total of 124,000 millionaires but the list is growing faster than China due to the strong economic growth and the flourishing software industry.\u00a0Among these millionaires, more than half of them are between the age of 21 to 32 and over 63% come from the information technology sector. Another interesting fact: 73% of them are self-made millionaires, which means they all start from \u201cempty hands\u201d or nothing, using their technology talents to create their own wealth, without any help from family or government.<\/p>\n

Similar to India, Chinese millionaires are much younger and also derive their wealth from their own private companies, not state own companies. The study found that the average age of Chinese millionaire is 32 with many are still in their 20s. While China is a central planned economy, these millionaires are making money in private business, mostly in technology areas. The others, about 20% made their million in housing market, and 15% in stock market. Surprisingly, 30% of China\u2019s millionaires were women. The study also indicated that the actual number of Chinese millionaires and billionaires is probably much higher since the study is only based on public assets such as stocks, bonds, and banking accounts.<\/p>\n

Another country where the list of billionaire and millionaire grows very fast is Russia. The recent list included 87 Russian billionaires, and 136,000 millionaires but most of them are in natural resources business (Oil, Gas, Timber, Mining) rather than technology.<\/p>\n

The report highlights that wealthy populations are growing more rapidly in developing countries than developed countries like the U.S. and Europe. The slowing of both U.S. and European economies hinders wealth accumulation. However, there is a consolation notion that the U.S. will continue to lead the world in billionaire population in the near future as it has 469 billionaires, more than any other country.<\/p>\n

During an interview,\u00a0one of India’s wealthiest, Wipro chairman and billionaire Azim Premji, attributed the fast rising of wealth in his country to its base of highly skilled workers. He said: “We are beginning to see that in the knowledge age, who has the most skilled workers will win. Who has the most qualified workers will reap the most rewards. In India we graduate 580,000 software engineers per year when the U.S. only graduate 70,000 software engineers this year. You do not have to study economic, you do not have to look at the ten years or five years plans. Just look at what the world need today than you can find the answer. There is a critical shortage of software engineer everywhere. India does not have enough, China does not have enough. Nobody has enough. Today global companies are willing to pay talented software engineer two times or three times more than few years ago regardless where they work. It is no longer about low cost anymore but the rule is about the needed skills that you have. As more Indian\u2019s engineers are working in high paying jobs, the economy improves. As these engineers advance, they create their own companies and become millionaires and billionaires. There is no miracle, only knowledge, skills and a little luck.\u201d<\/p>\n

As technology become the key driver for economic grow, more opportunities will be created. Technical people who know how to capture these opportunities will get into the billionaire and millionaire list. The study goes further by predicting that as more technologies will be deployed in the near future, the list will continue to grow with more younger people since they have the knowledge and skills to take advantage of these opportunities.<\/p>\n
