They believe that they deserve better as the market is willing to pay them more. However, some believe that they are very good and keep asking for more, if not they will change job. Instead of knowing themselves, they are blinded by their pursue of money. They forget about the knowledge, the skill and the ability to perform and they often argue that they are the best to judge on how much they worth.<\/p>\n<p>There was a study by Dr. Collins conducted few years ago that I wanted to share with you. In this study, Dr. Collins conducted in a large software company by allowed developers to determine their own salaries.<\/p>\n<p>The first month everyone chose their own salary but the amount numbers were kept private. By reviewing the number results with the evaluation of managers, Dr. Collins found that the best people paid themselves less than they could. The average and below average people paid themselves more. The company paid the suggested salaries like nothing has happened and it seemed people were very happy.<\/p>\n<p>The next month the company set a total budget for the salaries and repeated the same study, except this time all employees had to submit their proposed salaries to each others for comment. Team member cannot approve or reject the salary, only provide comment. When everything was done, the sum of all salaries was only slightly over budget. Upon closer inspection the company found that only one person was highly overpaid based on the salaries of his colleagues with similar skills and qualifications. This person had not listened to the comment of his teammates who had told him he was overpaying himself. After being informed of this, he immediately reduced his salary and the group met their budget.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Collins repeated this study at thirty four other software companies. Each time, the results were very similar. He concluded: \u201cPeople who think they are underpaid are probably not very good at what they do. People who think they are overpaid are probably pretty good and team members are the best judge of each other\u2019s skills and abilities.\u201d Dr. Collins suggested that company developed a \u201c360% review\u201d so team members can evaluate each other then base their salary on that information instead of let managers make decision.<\/p>\n<p>He told the developers: \u201cThe best person who can judge you is your team members. People who work with you on a daily basis.If everyone thinks you are aggressive, it is time to take a serious look at your personal style. If everyone at work thinks that you are lazy, it is time to take a serious look at your working behavior. If everyone at work thinks you are incompetent, it is time to take a serious look at your skills and abilities. Your team members are the camera that see you as you are. They can see your ability to write code, deal with stress, communicate ideas, write clearly, and many things that are critical to our jobs as software developers. If you are not using them as a resource, you are overlooking a powerful tool that can help you improve both your technical and non-technical abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in improving yourself, ask your team members what they think of your abilities. Not just your development skills, but your writing skills, interpersonal style, ability to deal with stress, etc\u2026Ask them to be honest because you want to improve yourself.
