Women in technology<\/p>\n

Yesterday, there was an interesting article about women in technology in the local newspaper that I would like to share with you:<\/p>\n

\u201cFew months ago, there was a global online poll asked young girls to choose the best occupation when they grow up. The overwhelming choice among the girls was TV news reporter but surprisingly the second choice was computer engineer. For years, it was believed that women would not select professions in science or technology but the online study indicated that change has happened. By look closely at the data, there was another surprise: The majority of respondents who selected computer engineer as future profession came from Asia, notably China and India where most young girls in the U.S and Europe selected TV news reporter.<\/p>\n

Why Asian girls who come from a more traditional culture want to study computer and technology? Dr. Alicia Bell who conducted the study explained: \u201cIt is easy to explain this phenomenon. If you look at the economies of both China and India, you can see that the best jobs are in technology, the highest paying jobs are in computer. Women by nature are very practical. They know what would be best for them and for their family. They make their choices carefully and I think in the next ten years, both India and China will have more women scientists and technologists than the U.S and Europe. Even today men is still dominated the science, technology, and math areas but the number of women are increasing fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

India\u2019s technology sector, especially the software industry has been growing significantly. An experienced software engineer can make three to five times more than other professions. It explains why the number of Indian women who study computer software or information technology has increased steadily in the past ten years. Today in India, 35% of college students in computer and information technology are women.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s technology sector is not growing like India as the manufacturing sector is still the biggest but Chinese women have different attitude. A college student, Jade Chen explained: \u201cAs a Chinese woman, if you do not have a good education, you will end up working in factory making clothes or shoes. You will be exploited, taking advantage of, and you will live like rats in those housing for factory workers. Education is the best way out of that misery. However, if you want to use your brain instead of your hands then you should select a career that will give you the best advantage. Why do you want to study business then become a receptionist or a secretary for someone? Why do you want to study foreign language to become a translator for people who do not appreciate you? You have a brain so you select what would give you the same opportunity as somebody else. That is why I study software engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Irene Wang, a student in Shanghai Jiao tong university told the interviewer that she represents a younger generation of Chinese women who are not feel intimidated by technology. She loves video games and had been playing it for many years. She pursues a career in computer science because she wants to create video games for women as today games are too violent, not suitable for women. She\u00a0 said: “When I enrolled in computer science my family was strongly opposing it, they want me to be a teacher then get married. However, most of the girls that I know in school do not want that kind of life anymore. They want to discover, they want to do something exciting, they are smart and they want to be challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a traditional culture like China there is strong opposition for women to study science or technology. Surprisingly some came from college men. One college website posted a comment “Being a scientist is a man\u2019s job. Do girls want to wear a white coat with funny hair like Einstein?” Another website warned: \u201cWho want to go out with girls in computer science?\u201d. Although it is possible that some young women may turn away from technology careers because of such bad perception but after those negative websites came out, within days there was a massive cyber attack on those websites. Many signed \u201cGirl power\u201d, \u201cHacking queens\u201d or \u201cPrincess at keyboard\u201d to warn those young men that they are not the one who know something about computer hacking.<\/p>\n

Few days after the \u201cWar\u201d in cyber space, Beijing Newspaper published a list of salaries of women in technology. Among them, Xiaoyang Wang, the CIO of Lenovo company and several women computer scientists with salaries much higher than men. At the same time, Hurun company also listed that among thousands of millionaires and billionaires in China, over 30% of them were women, and many came from technology sector. It stopped the nonsense sentiment among students. This year, many universities reported that the number of women enroll in computer science, information technology has increased 12% more than last year.<\/p>\n

At a time when the economy is leaving many recent grads without jobs, opportunities are still plentiful in science and technology area. Last year, Google started recruiting programmers in China and among the selected 46% were women. Both Irene and Jade already have jobs, as programmers for Google, although both have not even graduated.<\/p>\n

As for her family\u2019s perceptions of her career choice. Irene said: “My mother is very proud of me. A lot of her friend’s children who graduated are still looking for jobs. She now says, \u201cmy girl got an offer from Google. She’s so smart.'”<\/p>\n
