Time of the robot<\/p>\n

For many years, people who work in the \u201clowest-paid\u201d manual labor never have to worry about losing jobs. Many of them are farmers who work in the agriculture area and use their manual labors for a living. However\u00a0 as robot technology becoming sophisticated, that area is also changing.<\/p>\n

There are many robots are being build today as the technology is evolving fast. From sophisticated robots that go to Mars to simple robot toys for young children but the most interesting news this year is there are several new robots are being introduced to the market: The \u201cAgriculture Robots\u201d, most of them are coming from China, which may seem strange, given the low cost of labor there.<\/p>\n

Many of these robots are being built by the electronic manufacturing Foxconn, who also builds the iPhone, iPods, iPads for Apple. The company is planning to incorporate one million robots into its assembly line in the next three years. Foxconn\u2019s managers told the newspaper:\u201dToday wages are rising fast in China, the demands for skilled workers has risen to the point that their wages are double and triple every year so it is not profitable for our company anymore. To keep cost at a stable stage either we have to move our factories to lower cost countries like Vietnam, Laos, or Africa or keep our factories here but replace workers with robots. Since many complex tasks used to be performed by workers can be performed by robots, we believe that we have made a right decision to select the second option.\u201d<\/p>\n

Similar thing is happening in the agriculture areas too. Robots are being used to replace manual labor farmers. Since most small farms have been incorporated into large industrial farms, the farming process has already been simplified and standardized. Earth removing equipments have leveled all areas into large flat surfaces so semi-autonomous robots could navigate and do their farming works. These robots can go through rice fields, orchards relatively easy and do the same works that farmers have been doing for centuries. They often work 20 hours a day and night so productivity can increase significantly (Robots needs few hours for gas, recharge batteries and light maintenance so they cannot work 24 hours nonstop yet). Of course, many farmers are not very happy to see that their jobs are being replaced by machines. Especially these machines are being control by a number of computer technicians who did not come from their villages. There are several protests in remote areas in Qinghai and Sichuan when machines are being brought in to replace farmers.<\/p>\n

The question is can robots replace human activities? The correct answer is not yet. Of course robots can replace some human activities but not everything. After all, robots still need people to control as they cannot think for themselves, at least not yet. The most advanced thinking \u201crobots\u201d ever built is a computer called Watson, develop by IBM and Carnegie Mellon where it can answer million of questions in plain English language. It also defeated two best champions in a TV game called \u201cJeopardy\u201d.<\/p>\n

One robotic engineer explained: \u201cBasically robots are good in many manual tasks but they still need human operators so the answer is in the next 20 years, there will be more robots being built to do many heavy manual tasks but we also need more engineers, more software developers to design and program these robots. There will be many jobs available for people who have good knowledge and skills but unfortunately, many factory jobs will be replaced by robots. I think, clothing, shoes, textiles, and some agricultural jobs may be gone soon but there are much more opportunities in engineering and software development as the robotics industry will booming soon.<\/p>\n

Today, the best robots are still being designed and built by the U.S and Japan. Japan hopes to have more robots, especially service robots to cook, to clean house, to work in office by 2025. The question is do robots really cheaper than manual labor? The answer is it depends on the country. For example in the Scandinavia, labor costs are substantially high so the use of robots could be the answer. In China where labor cost is low then robots may not be a good idea. However, China has an incentive to create robots, not for its own use but for export. That is what they are hoping for and to capture this new lucrative market. Having robots is also a solution in dealing with the rising wages. In Sichuan, a manager told his workers: \u201cIf you do not demand higher wages then we do not bring in the robots\u201d. In country like the U.S, when labor cost is very high, that is what the Chinese is aiming for as the ultimate market.<\/p>\n
