Long term perpective<\/p>\n

Last week, Dr. Ed Mansfield a famous research scientist came to give a seminar to our students. For twenty five years, he has conducted sociology research in four continents. According to him, the most successful people in any society are those who take the \u201clong term perspective\u201d when making decisions. After studying many factors that contribute to the success of people, from college students to executives, from millionaires and billionaires, he concluded that there was only one key factor that made them differ from others \u2013 their \u201cLong-term view.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Dr. Mansfield found was, the longer term view a person has, the higher a person move up in any society. He told the student: \u201cThis factor is universal, it is true in the U.S, in Europe, in Asia and in Africa. These successful people do not plan for one year, or even five years to get to their goals. Many have plans that take ten, or twenty years to reach their goals. They make decisions that may not happen for many years but in the end, most of them succeed. These people do not let anything, any short term events change their long term perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave an example of someone with a long time perspective as students who spends ten or fifteen years studying to become medical doctors. He said: \u201cThese people take extraordinarily long time to lay down the foundation for their lifetime career. That is why society considered medical doctors in the highest esteem of any profession. People admire the sacrifices that they have made in order to work in a profession that takes a long time. People with long term view are willing to pay for the price of success for a long time before they achieve it. They think about the consequences of their choices and decisions in terms of what they might achieve in five, ten, fifteen, and even twenty years from now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave another example of a student who has to make a decision between go to college or go to work after graduated from high school. He said: \u201cGetting a job after high school is a quick way to have money. It allows the person to have things that any young person at that age would want. Today they are computer, stereo system, electronic games, TV, motorcycle, cars etc. That is why in the U.S, over 65% of high school graduates decided to go to work instead of go to college. However people who graduated from college will make more money, have better career, better chance to move higher up than people without a college education – but they must wait for several years. The ability to wait, the ability to postpone immediate needs for better future is the key factor that help them to succeed in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave another example of people at the lowest levels of society have the shortest time perspectives. He said: \u201cThese are people who focus on immediate gratification and often engage in behaviors that lead to negative consequences in the long term. At the bottom of society, there are alcoholics and drug addicts. These people think in terms of the next drink or the next drug fix. Their time perspective is often less than one or two hour. They do not care what will happen to them, all they want is something that make them \u201cfeel good\u201d immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also talked about people who would do anything just to satisfy their near term needs. They have no direction in life and often follow what are available at that time. They have time perspective in few weeks or few months. They do not think far enough and often has no vision about life ahead. They just want something fast and quick and ready to jump into anything that give them instant satisfaction. He cited example of college drop-out students who abandon their study because they have urgent needs to be \u201csomebody\u201d such as movies stars, rock starts or models. Most of them are na\u00efve and become victims of their own illusions.\u201d He advised: \u201cThe ability to practice self-disciplined, self-control, and self-denial, to sacrifice in the short term so you can enjoy greater rewards in the long term, is the starting point of developing a long time perspective. This attitude is essential to higher achievement of any kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

He encourages students to practice a long term perspective in every area of their lives, especially in the career and relationship. He said: \u201cToday, so many young people are getting into serious relationship too fast and too quick before they even mature. Many people get married before they even have a stable career or even before getting a job. That is why our society has so many divorces. These are disaster in both financial and emotional in any person\u2019s life. The worst thing can happen is having children when they are young, being parents when they are still in school. Even with family support these can be a major obstacle in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concluded: \u201cThink of where you would like to be in five years, ten years from now. Have career goal from a long term perspective and begin today to take steps in that direction. Do not just think about having a degree, it is short term as it only take four more years or less. Think about what you want to do after having your degree. Think about being a good professional people. Think about being the best citizen and what you can do to help others. Focus on your long term plans, do not let anything distract you from your long term goals. It is not easy but to succeed, you must have a long term perspective. Life is a very long book and you are just in the first chapter.\u2019<\/p>\n
