Mobile applications: New opportunity<\/p>\n

When Indian\u2019s top companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro are moving into \u201cCloud computing\u201d business and large information technology (IT) outsourcing contracts, it leaves an open door for smaller companies to move quickly into a new business: The iPhone and Android applications. According to some reports, these mobile applications or apps are relatively small, have lower revenue not suitable for big company but work very well for small companies of fifteen to fifty people.<\/p>\n

Many of the these companies do not have offices or locate in technology parks. Most of them are located in small houses, not too far from garbage piles of the slums. Inside, you can find dozen programmers sit next to each other, usually sharing a large table, busy coding on laptops in rooms without air conditioning. These people either create their own mobile apps or receive contracts from small U.S companies to code and test mobile apps for them.<\/p>\n

While IT outsourcing dominates India\u2019s software industry with over $90 billion dollars in revenue, small companies specialize in mobile apps are creating the next wave of outsourcing: Small works, lesser revenues but fast completion rate. A company owner said: \u201cWe have on the average about a three month to complete a project, each project needs ten to fifteen programmers and we pay our programmers about $400 to $600 per month. We do not hire college graduates because they demand higher wages. We hire mostly programmers who only have 10 months to 2 years training. These people need jobs and they do not mind about working conditions. I was a manager for a large outsourcing software company but I quit as I see good opportunity in mobile apps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, over four hundred small companies specialize in mobile software were found with thousands of programmers hired to meet the demand for building apps for Apple\u2019s iPhone, iPad as well as Google\u2019s Android. According to recent study, mobile-apps outsourcing is a $3 billion annual business in 2010 but could go up to $6 billion by 2012. If tablet such as iPads can replace the Laptop then this market could soared to $ 10 billion in the next three years. Based on industry forecast, most mobile applications are simple, easier to do so than most larger IT applications. As the cost of software continues to rise in India, the country may not be able to capture this market but another country could come into the competition if it has less cost than India. According to a study: the battle for mobile apps would be determined by one single factor: \u201clower cost\u201d and this could be China, Vietnam, the Philippines or Malaysia and not India.<\/p>\n

In the past 12 month, demands for programmers who write code for Apple\u2019s iOS platform rose 20 percent. Demand for programmers with Android skills rose by 15 percent. Demand for Research in Motion\u2019s BlackBerry devices increased by 5 percent and demand for Microsoft mobile applications increased 8 percent. The total estimate could be ten to twenty thousand new programmers by the end of 2011.<\/p>\n

Since the demand is high and opportunity is good. Many Indian programmers in the U.S to move back to India and set up their own companies. One engineer Ravi Mukundar told the Delhi Newspaper: \u201cIt is easy to start in this new business. Last year I made over one million dollars with just ten programmers. They all work in my mother\u2019s home so I do not need to rent office place but as our company expands we may have to look for better place. The iPhone and iPads market are very hot. We had thirty apps already, we sell for $2 per download via Apple\u2019s store. Last month we had over twenty thousand download for each of our apps, if it continue this way we are expected to make more than last year. The nice thing is that once I have something for iPhone, I can make some modifications so it can work for Android, \u00a0Blackberry, and Microsoft. So for every apps we created, we can multiply it by a factor of four which means I can charge four times more money. Currently Ravi pay his programmers $5 to $10 an hour, but compares with $50 to $100 per hour charged by developers in the U.S. He believe that he had significant cost advantage. He estimated that it took him about $10,000 to develop an apps which is much cheaper than have it done in the U.S. However, hiring programmers has gotten more difficult due to the shortage of skilled workers. He said: \u201cCompetition is increasing a lot, and even programmers with 10 months of training are difficult to find.\u201d We are having difficulty to expand our business.<\/p>\n
