Go to college or not<\/p>\n

Today many young people often asking themselves whether they should go to college,\u00a0get a degree<\/a>\u00a0then start a business, or just abandon college and start their own business. There are many students who go to schools then start their own companies as they believe the knowledge that they learn in college can help them to be successful. However, there were students who dropped out of college to start their own companies and also became successful like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n

As a professor, I always advise students to go to college to be educated. I often tell them that there is exception but it is very rare. Do not let a few successful cases be your guide in life as you need to look at the reality. Today, there is significant high number of unemployment, the chances of getting a good job without a college degree is very slim. The chance of starting a company without a good education foundation is more slim. Please note that Steve Job started Apple, became very successful but he had no knowledge about management. He had to hire people to manage his company for him. Without knowledge about management, he allowed these people to control everything. He trusted them but they took advantage to fire him and his technical team, took all the money, then let Apple bankrupted. Steve Job admitted to students at StanfordUniversity: \u201cIf I had a management course, if I know a little bit about finance, it would never happen. I was na\u00efve then but I learned my hard lesson. I had to swallow a bitter pill to learn about management but I hope that you do not have to, you are all educated\u201d.<\/p>\n

The U.S Government had statistics about the differences in the lives of those who graduate from college and those who do not get a degree. Workers with a bachelor\u2019s degree earn, on average, 60 percent more than non-degreed workers. The number of employment rates are also significantly higher among people without degrees, at nearly twice the rate of degreed people. More than just having jobs, the data also suggest that people with degrees are healthier, live longer and are generally happier than people without degree.<\/p>\n

Of course, college degree is not a guarantee for success. To succeed you need knowledge and skills, a strong motivation and determination, and a true passion for what you are doing. Many students believe that by having a degree they can get job and everything would be good. A degree is only a piece of paper, it can help you to apply for job (Many jobs require college degree) but without knowledge and skills, you will not succeed. Many students complained: \u201cThat is not fair, I have worked hard to get a degree and now I cannot get jobs. A college is a waste.\u201d Before blaming college, you need to realize that life is never fair. What you need in life is more than a piece of paper. You do need knowledge, skills and passion to do what you want.<\/p>\n

College is place where you meet friends and people who share your passion. Successful people often said that college help them to meet incredible people. Many became their partners, while others help them with good advices and ideas. Bill Gates did not start Microsoft by himself, it was his high school friend, Paul Allen who did most of the technical works and his college friend, Steve Ballmer who manages the company. That is why Microsoft is still doing well today. Steve Jobs started Apple with his friend, Steve Wozniak who did the technical works. However, when Apple was successful, Wozniak left to go back to school to get a degree in engineering. Without a trusted friend, Jobs was cheated and fired from his own company.<\/p>\n

Additionally, college provides learning experiences beyond the classroom. To be successful in school, you have to learn to balance between school works and personal time, do homework assignments and follow through your commitments. These skills are valuable in any business. Basically college is a \u201csmall world\u201d when you can do many things without much risks, the worst thing can happen is you fail a class. Imagine what happen if you fail your own business in the \u201creal world\u201d.<\/p>\n

Of course, you go to college to get educated. While you may not learn everything to be successful in a classroom or from books, everything from business basics to technical knowledge are taught in college programs. Furthermore, having a college degree can offer a level of credibility. When you are dealing with other people, it will serve you well. We are still living in a society where college degree is valued. People will look at you as a college graduates, people who are educated.<\/p>\n

The question whether you should attend college or not is your decision. It is up to you to make decision as a matter of your own abilities and expectations. You can follow your heart, your passion and your motivation to do whatever that make your life worth living. If you do not have motivation, determination and passion for what you do, no education can help you to be successful in this world. Please remember that it is a personal choice.<\/p>\n
