Every first step is difficult<\/p>\n

It is the beginning of a new school year for college students but to new students it is also a new life. A life full of excitements and stresses, of worries and joys. You need to make sure that you start your college life as strong as possible. Please remember: \u201cEvery first step is difficult\u201d but if you can overcome it, your second step will be better than the third step will be much easier. If you can start your first step with strong and determination then everything follow will be much better.<\/p>\n

The number one problem of every college students is time management. It is the biggest challenge while in college and the cause of most college failures. Prepare to balance your time as soon as possible and apply it from the first day in college is the most important thing that you can do. I always advise students to have a calendar.\u00a0It can be a paper calendar, calendar on your laptop or cell phone. No matter what kind it is, make sure you have one. Write down everything on your calendar such as time to go to class, time to study, time to eat, time to sleep etc. Do not think it is so simple or not important. By planning everything and follow it carefully, it will build your time management skill.<\/p>\n

Of course, you do need time to rest, relax too. A calendar goes from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. does not mean you do not have time for relaxing. However, when planning on your calendar please follow this formula: For every one hour of class, you need minimum of two hour of study by yourself. Group study is extra. If you follow this advice, you will see how much time you have left for something else.<\/p>\n

Of course, there are things happen that you are not expecting. You may not have known that your school have a special celebration, a guest speaker or some events and you do not want to miss it. You need to rearrange your calendar time so it gives you some flexible when needed. Sometime professors give homeworks for the week and you need extra time for it. Go back to the calendar and find out how much time you need to do it, how much time you will need to research it, and how much time you will need to write it. If you think you will need three days for the homework, work backward from the due date and schedule the time into your calendar before it is too late.<\/p>\n

Many students skip reading books in the first few weeks of class because they have other activities. Please do not do that as it will put you behind everyone else in class. If you have assigned readings, please do read it so you can stay current with other people in class. Many students do not have good habit of reading, they often complain that they have to read too much. Many only skim through the reading or only read few paragraph. Reading is a critical skill and you need to build it as early as possible. If you do not do well in reading in the first years, you will have more problem in the next year and later because the amount of readings increases significantly each year. Make reading a pleasure by asking yourself, what is the author wants to say in this assignment? What is the main theme? What is the key concept? Do not read everything all at once without thinking. Start asking before reading will help you learn faster and better.<\/p>\n

Of course, you do not have to study all the time so you do not have time to eat and sleep. Every college students also have to involve in something other than studying. However, select activities that keep your brain balanced and your body healthy such as sports is better. Avoid too many parties, avoid drinking alcohol or using any type of illegal substances. Many college students like to try \u201csomething new\u201d without thinking about serious consequences. If you do that, you are destroying your brain and your future.<\/p>\n

College is stressful and challenging. However with your well structured calendar, with good group of friends, with some light sports and hobbies, you will find it enjoyable. When, and if, you find yourself under some pressures that you cannot handle, trying to find help. Know where to go for help before your school begins so that, just in case things get rough, your small obstacle does not turn into a disaster.<\/p>\n
