But for many years, people often mentioned the name of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sergey Brin, or Mark Zuckerberg but now it is about to change. Recently, more women are getting into the technology industry, some of them have moved up and occupied top positions usually occupied by men. Of course, in the past, there were Carly Fiorina, former CEO of HP and Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay and now CEO of HP but both of them came from the business, not technical. (Meg has an MBA from Harvard and Carly has an MS from MIT).

As more women are now study Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information System management, the number of women top executives in the industry have also increased quickly. On the top is Evan Chen, the CEO of Trend Micro, the third-largest computer-security company in the world. Its market value is $5.5 billion. Chen, who helped founded the company in 1988, became CEO in 2004 is considered one of the most powerful and richest woman of the technology industry today.

Another is Michelle Peluso, CEO of “Travelocity”, the second largest online travel company. In an interview with newspaper, She said: “ The Internet has created a lot of opportunities for people, especially women to get into the technology entrepreneurial path. It is easier to start your own company because in the virtual world, nobody know whether you are a men or a women.”

Another top executive, Marissa Mayer, vice president at Google said: “Today many women are using the internet to get information, shop online, checking schools work of their children, reviewing family budgets. They use computers and smart phones for their own convenience just like anything else. Technology is no longer belong just to men as in the past. There are more opportunities today for women than 10 years ago. because more women are pursuing engineering and computer careers, many have proved that they are much better in business management than men.”

According to a new study of software industry, most men (74%) prefer to working on the design and implementation but most women (64%) are working in management position. The number of women in computer and engineering begin to increase in 2005 and now reaching about 35%. Last year nearly 25,000 women graduated in computer and engineering, up 12% from 2000. According to study, today women has better advantage because there is an imbalance ratio between men and women in technology company. To make up, most companies prefer to hire more women than men. However, due to the shortage of technology workers, it does not matter as almost all graduates get jobs. Larger companies such as Microsoft, Google, Oracles, Apple, Facebook etc have to recruit skilled people from other countries and bring them to the U.S to work. Last years, over 67% of foreign hired were women.

There are more opportunities for women to move up to top positions because the more women in companies, the better chance for them to move up. Another top executive, the CEO of Ruckus Wireless Selina Lo explained that the rise in women executives is also due to more social-networking among them that men do not have. She said: “Men go to work and sit in front of the computer all day. They rarely talk to each other unless they have to. Women go to work and in just few days, they make friends with all women in the company. They share information, mentor each others, support and promote their best people into management.”

Trend Micro’s Evan Chen, who noticed that more women are moving to top executives today after years of being the only one, says it is much better now. Ten years ago, top executives like her were such a rarity that she was often thought of as a secretary. She said: “”I used to pretend that I was just a secretary at engineering meetings. I would take notes, and suggest few things on a project. Nobody know I was their boss.”

Bad perspective can be hard to break. Jane Siegel, another top executive at Microsoft explained: “I took a team to Japan for technical discussion. when the first time we met, a Japanese manager thought I was a secretary and ordered me to bring coffee to the team. When I told him that I was an executive he did not believe it. He said: “How come you can be their boss, you are just a woman”. Of course, later he apologized and told me that it would take many more years for something like this to happen in Japan.” For now, the swelling number of women executives are finding ways to increase their ranks and wealth. Many have reached millionaire and billionaire status in the same manner of the men.

Công nghệ đã giúp nhiều người đạt tới mơ ước của họ.
