New Industry trend<\/p>\n

One of India’s top technology companies is opening a major facility next to Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, where it plans to hire several hundreds of software engineers. HCL Technologies is investing $4 million in its “GlobalDeliveryCenter,” as part of its move to hire skilled software workers in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Although Indian outsourcing companies do most of their work at offices in India to keep costs lower but recently many have invested in facilities in both the U.S and Europe to access to workers with special skills that they cannot find in India. It is also a strategic move to compete with other western software giants like IBM, Oracles, HP and possible Microsoft and Google in the future. It is also a change in business direction to quiet criticism of outsourcing by creating jobs in the U.S. when the country is struggling with high unemployment.<\/p>\n

A top manager of the company said: \u201cThe market has changed. It is no longer about low cost anymore but the new rule is about high skills, and skills that we do not have. Today, technology has changed everything and as more companies are using complex information technology to automate their process and integrating their supply chains, it requires different skills, different business, different type of workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

HCL has opened similar centers around the world to capture large complex projects that require special skills only available in some western countries. Today India\u2019s state education is still focusing on programming and testing which can only produce lower cost workers but not higher salary managers or architect. Its education is still behind many top schools in the U.S on architecture, integration, large scale system development and security. The best way to acquire these skills is to hire experienced U.S educated workers, learn from them, have them teach Indian software engineers and build a new skilled workforce for the future. It is also a strategy to compete in the high-end software projects that usually go to large western companies such as IBM or Oracle. Most of these projects are valued at several hundred millions to billion dollars each. One Wall street analyst wrote: \u201cIndian companies are very aggressive, they know their strengths and weaknesses. They do not want to stay in the low cost model where they earn few hundred thousand dollars per project. What they want is the larger ones, the million and billion dollars contracts. This is their first move to learn more about these lucrative projects it by hiring away software engineers who used to work for IBM, Microsoft, Boeing, Oracles so they can learn. Few years from now, they will be ready to compete as they want to control this trillion dollars business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently, HCL has open facilities in North Carolina, New Jersey and Brazil and Mexico to have a strong presence in these hot market. India companies tend to hire about 80 percent of their workers locally with about 20% transferred from HCL in India for management positions.<\/p>\n

Most of the jobs created in Redmond will be for software engineers, including specialists in computer security, senior architect, project managers, service managers, Large scale integration specialists, Wages at the U.S. centers are based on local market competitive. The company also plan to hire many of its local workers directly from college. It’s working with universities nearby to train and recruit employees. Locally, the company is working with SeattleUniversity, SeattlePacificUniversity and the University of Washington. Students in software engineering and computer science can do internships with HCL in their senior year.<\/p>\n

Last year, HCL Technologies has made over $6 billion with 85,000 employees in 31 countries.<\/p>\n
