Upward mobility<\/p>\n

Few years ago, HarvardUniversity conduct a study about upward mobility. Their researchers were looking for factors that would predict whether or not a person was going to move upward, succeed, be wealthier in the future. They studied many factors such as level of education, intelligence, environment, culture, and family connections. In every case, they found individuals who had been born in wealthy family, had every good thing usually did not do well in life. They also found individuals who had been born in poor environment, or with no advantages at all, usually have been more successful. They also found factors such as intelligence, culture, environment had nothing to do with the ability of an individual to move upward or be successful. They determined that there was only one factor that mattered: \u201cThe ability to set career goals\u201d.<\/p>\n

The study found that all successful people had career goals. All of them know what they wanted in life even when they were still young. Some set career goals even before they went to college. By having career goals, they then set direction and plan to achieve them. By having prepared earlier, they knew about obstacles and risks and they determined to overcome them. In all situations, they never lost sight of their career goals.<\/p>\n

The study also found that people who were born in a wealthy family usually lack the determination to pursue anything. Many had no career goal as most things were arranged for them. Many did not have to work hard to get what they want. Most pursued pleasures in the short term as they felt that they deserve them. They all have what psychologist call \u201cThe inability to delay gratification.\u201d These people had a tendency to take anything that come their way. They did not think deeply about anything as they believed that someone always took care of them. Because they came from well-connected family, their parents or relatives provided them with many things so they just spend whatever they got and rarely spend a single minute thinking on something else. Working hard never occurs to them. If they face obstacles, there were always someone who would help them. Without a career plan, they were like a ship without a rudder. They were easily be blown off course by the slightest breeze. When they were in school they were likely to change majors, failed classes, drop out, or took many years to graduate. Without a strong motivation, their career often stagnated because they did not have the motivation or determination to overcome any obstacles.<\/p>\n

The study concluded that people with career goal always move up successfully in the course of their lifetimes. They may start small but eventually they achieve something big. They may be humble in the beginning but eventually they get the glory at the end. When a person spend months and years developing their skills, and expanding their knowledge in order to be successful, they have the determination, the motivation, and the passions to achieve what they want in life.<\/p>\n

As college students, it is important to understand that everything that you are doing today is part of a long journey in time and at the end of which you are going to be successful or not. When you set your career goal, you develop the direction and discipline to delay gratification until you reach your goals. The combination of long-time goals and delayed gratification puts you onto the road to success.<\/p>\n

As college students, you must think about your career. Decide exactly who you want to be, what kind of job you want to work on, and how much you want to achieve in five years, ten years and twenty years from today. Write it down on paper or on your laptop. Make a plan on how to achieve them. Take action on your plan every single day. You can develop the ability to delay gratification. Instead of go out to a party and enjoy something now, stop and think about that decisions as well as the consequences. You need to decide in advance to \u201cthink carefully\u201d before any situation may happen. This can change the way you spend your time in college almost immediately. If you study at something you like, you will be good at it, and eventually you will move up to the top of your class. If you do not know what to choose between becoming a doctor or a software engineer, aim for the highest paid career that has the most demanding educational requirements. If you try the hardest first, and decide it is too tough, or you just do not like it, at least you will have tried it. It is easy to move to a field with lesser educational requirements later. It is almost impossible to move up once you have started.<\/p>\n

Once you have select a field of study area, study it as much as you possibly can. Figure out what you need and go there, do not delay your progress for any extra activities, no matter how good they might be. Never worry about being too serious about a career and not enjoying what college can bring. Maximize your potential for being the best student you can be and never lose sight of your career goal. You will move up sooner than you think.<\/p>\n
