2011 ranking of IT countries<\/p>\n

According to a Information Technology (IT) global report, the IT industry of developing countries is growing quickly and becoming more competitive. The study look at several factors such as overall business environment, IT infrastructure, education system, number of college graduates, research and development, legal environment, and government support for industry development.<\/p>\n

The study lists the \u201cTop 10\u201d IT industry: The U.S, Finland, Singapore, Sweden, The UK, Denmark, and Canada, with Ireland and Australia tied for eighth, and the Netherlands and Israel tied for tenth. The study finds that the IT industry in these countries are maintaining their positions of leadership because they have built up solid foundations for innovation through years of investment. However, the competition is becoming more fierce as new challengers in the developing world are improving quickly to meet the standards that these top leaders have set.<\/p>\n

The biggest improvement among developing countries this year is Malaysia, which ranked at number 11. A number of other countries including Mexico, Brazil, and Poland also move up very quickly by strong gains across the board in all IT categories. The study concluded:”It is clear that IT industry is getting more competitiveness as more countries are investing in this fast growing industry. Investing in technology will pay huge benefits in export revenue, jobs creation over the long term. No country can hold a monopoly in information technology as more countries are competing for this market. Today many developing countries are investing in their education, infrastructure, legal system and move away from the old model of providing low-cost services. Because of this fact, it seems the world will have many IT powerful nations.”<\/p>\n

A number of countries slipped in this year’s rankings after making gains in previous years. Among developed countries, Canada dropped three spots and the UK fell one spot in the overall rankings because of low enrolment in science and technology in their schools. Meanwhile, among developing countries, China’s progress dropped further compared to previous years because of its weak performance in both education and protecting the intellectual property.<\/p>\n

The global study is often used as a benchmark for foreign investments and IT outsourcing. Global companies rely on these type of reports to make their decision on where to invest or outsource their works. According to the report, the outsourcing alternative to India is Malaysia, not China. For several years, Malaysia has moved up steadily due to their improvements in education and training and protection of intellectual property. Malaysian workers have moved from the low cost labor of code and test to the higher skills in design, architect and large scale integration due to their improvement in IT trainings. This year, Malaysia bypassed China who is still uncertain about their business direction. Another key improvement in Malaysia is its worker\u2019s ability to use English as the main language for global business. A Malaysian government official said: \u201cWe have been invested in English training for several years and it pay off now.\u201d The report predicts that after India, Malaysia will become the next largest destination for IT outsourcing and foreign investment.<\/p>\n
