Google in China<\/p>\n

Google is making a large-scale recruitment campaign in China for computer science and software engineering graduates. According to Chinese newspapers, Google is recruiting employees for its research center, data centers, software development center, sales and marketing offices, information system management, and operation. Most jobs will be in Shanghai and Beijing.<\/p>\n

Some people attribute the massive recruiting as a response to the critical shortage of skilled workers in the U.S. Others believe it is a strategy to deny other rival companies from having a strong presence in China by hiring most qualified graduates. The newspapers reported that there was a long line of people in front of Google\u2019s office in Beijing, many expressed the desire to work for a well known company but the main motivation was probably the higher salary, three to four times more than what local companies would pay as well as the opportunities to go to work in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Wang Yu, a graduates from Beijing university said: \u201cI have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. In the past, they only hired few people but this time I heard that they are looking for hundreds. It means more chance to get a job with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yang Lin, another graduates who already had a job with a local company said: \u201cThey require candidates to have good English language. I have been practicing English for several years for this opportunity.\u201d He said if he got an offer from Google, he would quit his job with the local company immediately. He said: \u201cYou do not have this type of chance in a life time. Better pay, better job, better opportunity and a chance to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Google is not the only foreign company recruiting IT graduates in China these days. For years, Microsoft and IBM have been actively recruiting best students from top schools such as Tsinghua, Beijing and Shanghai University. Lately more foreign companies also recruiting there too so the competition for students is getting tougher. According to the newspaper, most students prefer to work for large and well known companies but smaller companies have their own strategy: \u201cThe opportunity to work in the U.S.\u201d A manager explained: \u201cWe are not Microsoft or Google. We do not have office here but we will take them to our company in San Jose and pay U.S wages, which is much more higher than they can make in China.\u201d When asking about why his company does not hire U.S engineers as there is a high unemployment there. He replied: \u201cYou cannot find skilled software engineer in any place near San Jose. They all be taken. There is a huge shortage of skilled people there. That is why I am here. I have to go to many places in Asia to recruit people. We need several thousand but so far I only hired few hundreds. I probably will not be home until December this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The most difficult thing that these recruiters face is still the language skills. A manager said: \u201cWe do not have problem with their technical skills. Most candidates are very competent but their language skills is not good. Most can read and write but they do not communicate well. They do not understand that computer work is not sit in front of the computer and code. That is what they are trained in schools. The fact is they must work in teams where team members come from many countries. Without a common language, they cannot talk to each other and we cannot hire them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edward Zhang, an senior analyst with a large U.S consulting firm has a more optimistic view. He said: \u201cThere are more students taking English class today than few years ago. Students are very pragmatic, they know what the industry demands are and adjust to it quickly. Few years ago, I can only find maybe a dozen good candidates with good English, now there are hundreds. As long as students know that there is a huge demand for them globally and English is the key to open that opportunity door, they will get the key.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the hiring candidates, there was a large number of women waiting for interview. A young women named Lin said: “The job situation is very good for women since Google provides good working experience, good environment to work and less discrimination than local company. We are software engineers not clerks but we are still being treated like clerks in the local companies. Foreign companies do not have that kind of attitude, we are told everybody is treated equally. We are excited that there are so many women who are in management position there too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Google is building its own data centers in Asia as it seeks to provide faster and more-secure access in the region. The centers will be in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong where it houses computer, telecommunications and storage systems, and typically include backup power supplies and security devices. The company\u00a0is investing heavily to build its presence in the world’s biggest Internet market with more than 800 million users.\u00a0China’s search market was worth approximately $2 billion dollars and is expected to grow an average of 50 percent each year over the next four years. While Google’s share in China’s search arena has been slowed in past few years, due to the competition with local Baidu but the large size and fast pace of growth of the overall market should provide it with enough buffer. Google believes that rapidly-growing Chinese exporters who want to expand its market to overseas customers, will make use of the company’s international search sites.<\/p>\n
