A graduated student wrote to me: \u201cI have a degree in business administration but could not find any job. My parents have to sacrifice a lot to pay for my education and they are disappointed. I spent the entire last year looking for work but found none. I am desperate and do not know what to do. Please advice.<\/p>\n

Answer: Today a college degree is NO LONGER a guarantee for job. To get good job, you must have SKILLS that companies need. Since you already graduated, you must look at your skills to determine which companies may need them, even they may be outside of your study area. Do NOT rely on the degree and narrow your choice to few companies that relate to your degree but use your skills to broaden your search for job. You need to update your resume to clearly focus on the specific position to which you are applying and what you can do for the company. You need to list all your skills that you have as related to the position, basically you want your skills to be more visible than your degree.<\/p>\n

If you spent the whole year looking for work but could not find anything then you may want to consider the need to change career. My question is do you know what you want your next career to be? Do you want something relate to your business area or something completely difference? You need to make a list of what you are looking for in a new career. A career is NOT a job, it has to be something that you can do for a long time and it has to be something that you will enjoy. For example, if you do not like to sit in front of a computer for several hours a day then you may not select software development work. If you do not like to work with numbers or calculation then you should not select accounting work.<\/p>\n

Once you know what your next career will be, you need to conduct research using the descriptions of what you are looking for in a new career. You may want to narrow it down to a few areas that fit what you want then identify the skills that are required to get those jobs and compare to what you have to determine what skills that you need to learn. For example, if you want to work as an Information System Manager then you already have the knowledge of business and management but may need to learn about information system and service management skills. In that case, you may have to return to school to take few more courses and get a second degree in Information System Management (ISM) that may help you to get the job that you want.<\/p>\n

Since this time you are focusing on getting the skills that can help you to build a new career you will be more focus and serious about study and I think you will do well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
