Students and careers<\/p>\n

There is a new study about career choices among college students and it reveals some interesting trends. The study finds that over 65% of college students select to study what they like to do and are willing to work in their dream job regardless of what it pays. However 32% of students select to study whatever as long as it pays more, a 14% increase from ten years ago.<\/p>\n

In the interview with researchers, students said they understand that money does not always bring happiness. However, with current high unemployment and economy uncertainty, they are willing to study anything that bring financial rewards and job security. In other words, they want to study a career where they can earn lots of money, even they may not like it. The study conducted by the National Colleges Students Association asked 8,200 colleges students to come up with a list of top fields that they wanted to study and compared them with the industry salary offers. It found that the average salary offer to graduates with\u00a0business<\/a>\u00a0degree remain flat, around $68,000 per year, while students with\u00a0computer science<\/a>\u00a0degree saw their average offer rise 8.3 percent to $92,000. Education, Literature, and Social sciences graduates do not fare well with average starting salary approximately $43,000 and most have difficult to find jobs.<\/p>\n

A student explained: \u201cWe invest four years in college education. Why do you want to make $50,000 a year when you can make $100,000 or more? Why do you want to study something that you like then after graduated have to spend many months looking for jobs and may not find it? Why not study something that even before you graduate, companies are looking for you and offer you better paying jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another student added: \u201cI have to take care of myself and my family first. If I have a good paying jobs and lots of money then I can pursue things that I like in life later. It is difficult to follow your dream career then end up in unemployment line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another students commented: \u201cSome of us are idealistic but we need to look at the current economy situation. Today the most important thing is having a job. You may have to work harder, study more, select something more difficult than you may like but four years is not too long then the future is what is important. I like arts, I like to draw and consider to study architecture but I realize that information technology would give me better chance, better pay and better jobs so I switch.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the study was announced, many university professors expressed their concern: \u201cThis steady increases in selecting career with higher starting salary is not a good thing. If they do not like their choice, many may not be able to complete their study. Even when they complete school and have good jobs, not all of them will be happy later in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

A professor told the newspaper: \u201cFew years ago, finance was the hot. The number of students enrolled in business and finance increased 35% and everyone wanted to work for banks and stock markets. With the financial crisis and millions of people lost their jobs, financial students found themselves compete for jobs with people that had years of experiences. This should be an example for people who want to go after high paying jobs\u201d.<\/p>\n

Many professors asked school advisors to advise students to make the right decision by select the best careers according to their ability, not what the jobs pay. However, as the number of unemployed graduates increases and the number of students who had high paying job show up in school with their sport cars and expensive clothes, it is difficult to convince them otherwise.<\/p>\n

Among the current \u201cHot\u201d fields that draw a lot of attention of students are: Petroleum engineering (Starting salary is $125,000). Software engineering (Starting salary is $92,000.), Chemical engineering: (Starting salary: $85,000), Computer science (Starting salary $85,000), Electrical or Electronics engineering (Starting salary: $85,000), Mining engineering (Starting salary: $82,000), Network and information system administration ($78,000), Business \u2013 Finance ( Starting salary\u00a0 $68,000) Business – Accounting (Starting salary: $62,000).<\/p>\n

An engineer student concluded: \u201cIt would be nice to be truly passionate about a career as you love your job, no matter what it pays. However if you can find something that makes you happy and earns a lot of money, why not?\u201d.<\/p>\n
