Which field to study?<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI am a first year student in Business Administration but thinking of switching to Computer Science. My parents say there are more money in business than computer since they own a company and want me to follow them to manage it. I like computer game and want to create video games for companies like Square or Electronic Arts. My questions are: Where do I get computer games design degree since my school do not teach it? If I switch to computer then later if do not like computer courses, is it difficult to switch back? Could you help? Let me know which area is better?<\/p>\n

Answer: It seems that you are still not sure about your career and undecided between making money and follow your interest. It is much safer to stay in business since you may not have to find job like most of other students. Your parents own a company and they want you to follow their step to manage that company. As long as you learn something and get a degree than your life is already being taken care of.<\/p>\n

By switching to computer science you are following your interest but you may face uncertainty since no one can guarantee jobs or money when you graduate. Please note that \u201cGame design\u201d is not an entry level position. In the video gaming industry, everyone starts as programmer. You will have to spend many years of programming and prove how talented you are then maybe the company promotes you to game designer. Square and Electric Arts are two premier companies in the world and very selective, it is difficult to get in. There are only few universities in the U.S offer degree in computer game because this is a special area. (The EntertainmentTechnologyCenter at Carnegie Mellon founded by Don Marinelli and Randy Pausch do offer a MS degree in this area).<\/p>\n

You need to plan your career carefully and know exactly what you want. Nothing is easy as it seems and you cannot switch back and forth between fields of study. Make up your mind, select one and go all the way with it. Be brave to overcome the obstacles, it will build your character.<\/p>\n
