US to help Indian students make informed choice<\/p>\n

Addressing the first India-US Higher Education Summit at Georgetown University, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the US wants better relationship between the two great countries to be as interconnected as possible at every level and not just at the government to government level. She said it is only the beginning but “clearly not the most important and lasting collaboration that we seek.”<\/p>\n

She also mentioned that the US is expanding its advising services for Indian students to make sure they do not become victims of “misleading offers” from \u201cdubious\u201d institutions. In the past several years, there were many Indian students who wanted to study in the U.S and enrolled in \u201cPhony universities\u201d or \u201cOn line universities\u201d that are not accredited. Many students arrived in the U.S and found out that the universities that they had paid a lot of money to enroll did not exist. Many \u201cOn line universities\u201d promised them degrees without have to leave India were only websites operated by people without any credibility and their degrees were worthless. Every years the US government have to close several \u201cphony universities\u201d but with the popular of the internet, these universities continue to exists as long as there are uninformed students who are willing to pay money for it.<\/p>\n

When the FBI raided one \u201cPhony university\u201d in Oregon that had been advertising in many national newspapers, magazines they found thousands phony diplomas and records showing an alarmingly large number of customers from all over the world. Many of them have held important positions in both government and industries. An FBI representative said that it is very risky to buy a \u201cfake degree\u201d or enroll in \u201cPhony university\u201d by claiming to have a degree or an education that you have not earned. It is like putting a \u201ctime bomb\u201d in your career as it could go off at any time, with significant consequences. The people who operate \u201cphony university\u201d will probably never suffer at all, they get the money and often disappear after a period of time. The people who enroll in those non-accredited school and fake degrees often suffer a lot when their employers find out. They will be fired but their record also bear the issue of using fake degree for employment and with a record like that, it will be very difficult to find employment.<\/p>\n
