Learning new skills<\/p>\n

In this fast changing time, whether you are in school or at work, one thing is certain: what you know now is good for now, but may be obsolete within a year or two. This means that there is a need to learn new knowledge and new skills quickly to keep up with changes. Many software developers often ask: \u201cWhat do I need to learn? and where to learn them?\u201d Managers also face similar question: \u201cWhat is needed now and what will be needed tomorrow? Who is responsible for deciding what skills is relevant? What is critical, and what is not?\u201d<\/p>\n

While most schools are often slow to change and not response quickly enough to market demand, students are desperately trying to figure out what skills that they need to get jobs and build their careers. They need to know how new technology will impact them when they graduate. They need to know what skills that they must have so they can do their jobs more efficiently. People at work also often worry about the ability to maintain their jobs when things change. They want to know whether they need more training or not to keep up with industry demand.<\/p>\n

When I was in Asia, many people have asked me these questions. People know that lifelong learning is important but do not know where to get the information. When I told them that most of these information can be found via the internet, they seemed surprised. The issue is many Asian do not read technical news or follow technical trends like westerners. They spend more time reading local news and entertainment websites but rarely check out technical websites. They prefer for somebody to tell them what class do they need to take to improve their skills. Basically, they are passive on learning rather than be active. Today, you can almost find any information and technical context from million sources: blogs, podcasts, websites, e-magazines, e-books if you want to. That is the power of the internet technology, it enable you to learn if you are serious about learning.<\/p>\n

Learning is acquiring necessary information to do your job. Learning can be formal or informal. You can learn formally by taking a class, or informally by just watching a more experienced workers do their job. The problem with learning is that it is difficult to know if you have learned something or not until you have to do it. Some formal learning classes require students to pass a test to verify that they learned something but test cannot measure the skills. Some people can do well on test but may not have the skill. The best way is to practice what you learned by actually doing it to test out yourself but few people would do that. If they took a class, they feel content that they already learned something until facing the reality of actually have to do it.<\/p>\n

I often ask myself, why there are so many unemployed software developers where are very high demand for them? A company owner told me: \u201cIt took me several months to find one to fit my need, most of applicants do not qualify because their skills are obsolete. As technology changes fast, high demand and good salary always go to people who possess the latest skills.\u201d The question is how do they know, how do people know what are hot and what are not? The answer is mostly on the technology news. For example, five years ago, mobile app was a new thing but few people learned them until it exploded today. He continued: \u201cYou do not want to wait until something become hot then learn them, it is too late. You have to follow the trend and learn something new before it is hot. For example, the next hot thing could be HTML 5.0 and Window 8. There are many websites and tutorials about these new things, if you want to learn them.\u201d<\/p>\n

When you need to develop new skills or meet market requirements. There are many training websites and tutorials that you can go to, Many of them do not charge money so please take advantage of them. Today learning opportunities are endless with Podcasts, blogs ,e-books, e-magazines, and technical forums where people share experiences. If you are serious about learning, get on with it. Training is important for students as well as people who already have jobs. Do not let a lack of skill or knowledge get in the way of your future or career. Take advantage of technology because in the fast changing world, your only assets are your knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n
