Advice to parents of college students<\/p>\n

A mother wrote to me: \u201cI often told my children to go to\u00a0college, get a degree and then find a job\u201d. Last week my friend forwarded me your blog when you wrote that a degree is no longer a guarantee for job and it made me worry. Although my older son is studying computer science in college but I am not sure what to say to my other children about what to study and what skills they should have to ensure that they can get good job. Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today\u2019s college students need more guidance to plan their career, develop skills, and to find work. And they need parents\u2019 help more than in the past. They need to keep a\u00a0practical attitude by balancing their ideas with reality. Young people are mostly idealistic but they have to be realistic also because by the time they graduate, they have to be able to get good job so they can take care of themselves.<\/p>\n

Both parents and students need to understand that there is a difference between a degree and skills. Today companies do NOT hire people based on degree alone BUT make hiring decision based on what skills graduates have and what they can do. Therefore, it requires students to know what skills are needed so they can develop them before they graduate to ensure that they will be able to get the job that they want. Since local job market is difference, it is important for both parents and students to do research to determine which skills are needed. One way is to read job descriptions advertised in newspapers to identify some of the skills required. It is also important to look at the global market trends because something that happens in developed countries such as the U.S. or Europe may eventually happen in other countries later.<\/p>\n

Since many young students are often busy and not paying much attention to global events, it is important for parents to look actively on behalf of their children to provide some useful guidance. Of course, it is not easy for young students to agree with parents\u2019 advices so parents have to be patient because college education is a major investment and parents must make sure that it brings the benefits. Of course, students should be studying what they like or are passionate about but they must understand market trends, industry needs and plan their career carefully based on facts and data.<\/p>\n

Since your older son is studying computer science, I think his brothers or sisters may also want to follow him too. Personally I believe technology especially information technology will continue to spread into all aspects of society. Within computer science, there are few areas that are becoming more important and I believe that they will completely change the industry in the next few years. I believe Artificial Intelligent, Machine Learning, and Data Mining are areas that have the best opportunity today. These fields are rapidly expanding in many areas in the industry such as robotics, search engines, business intelligent, and big data which will be very big in the next few years. The other areas are Biotechnology and Nanotechnology that will also grow very big and contribute to a new field called \u201cPersonalized medicine\u201d where doctors and scientists will understanding more about the genetic makeup of human molecular areas and open an entire new opportunities for innovation to treat diseases. In the next few years, there will be new discoveries, new innovations, and new opportunities in solving diseases problems.<\/p>\n

I believe that currently we are standing at the door of the next discovers, the next frontier that will change the way we live in the 21st<\/sup>\u00a0century. I believe technology will help us to advance more rapidly in every aspect of life such as transportation and manufacturing. Students who learn computer science, software engineering and information system management will be able to apply their skills into fast growing fields such as robotics, cloud computing, big data, and nano technology. They will allow technology students today to become the scientists, the engineers, the innovators of tomorrow.<\/p>\n

For parents of students who are studying other fields, I strongly advise them to discuss with their children to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and take few technology courses in college. I believe no one should stay idle although sometime the local market is slow to adapt to changing technology. Students should be more actively learning and acquire the needed knowledge and skills because we are living in a technological world.
