Teacher can make a difference<\/p>\n

Today technology industry drives the global economy. As a result, a country’s future depends on having a well-educated, technically proficient workforce. Every country leaders understand that to prosper in global economy, they must prepare their students for the world defined by technology and global connections.<\/p>\n

There are three key factors for a global technology education: Good training programs; Good teachers; and Motivated students. Among them, good teacher is the most critical because the difference between a good and not so good teachers can have tremendous impact on the achievement of students as they move through the education system and enter the workforce.<\/p>\n

A good teacher is not someone who has a degree but someone who understand what they are teaching and help students to understand it. This is more than having knowledge on the subject but also the ability to transfer the knowledge to the students. A good teacher know how to create opportunities for students to engage in new ideas and concepts with intellectual richness; This will require teachers to constantly renew their knowledge and continue to learn new things. A good teacher always assess what students understand and learning from their teaching and modifies their instruction to the needs of students; This will require teachers to spend more time in preparation and commit to seeing the success of their students beyond the school. Most importantly, good teachers believe that what they do makes a difference in their students’ learning and lives.<\/p>\n

I know many teachers who are committed to these ideas as they see their efforts are more than a job but a noble cause. These teachers need supports to fulfill their quest of education excellence. However, when I travel in Asia, particular in China and India,\u00a0 I do not see that they receive any support from school administrations or government. Their wages are meager, barely enough to survive. That is one reason some of them have to work extra jobs to make their living. A professor in India told me: \u201cWith an advance degree in computer science, I can get a job in the industry easily. I can make five times more than what I made in school. I think about my students, they need guidance and someone dedicate to help them. I want to make a difference in their lives because they are the future of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The similar thing also happened in China. I met a professor in Dali,\u00a0 province of Yunnan in a remote area occupied mostly by minority people such as the Bai people. I asked him: \u201cWhy someone with an advance degree in computer technology, graduated from a top university in China is willing to work in a small university in remote area? He explained: \u201cMost of my friends are either work for large companies in Beijing or get a job in big universities with better wages and better conditions. If everybody only think of themselves then who will be teaching the poor people in this remote area? Even today (2010) the school only have few computers, the internet is very slow, we do not have enough textbooks and when it rains, it pours for many days. However if you look at our students, many come from small villages and they travel for many miles to come here despite the weather. They are the first generation in their family ever go to college. If they are properly trained and educated, their lives would improve and if they have better jobs, their entire family could benefit. That is why I want to make a difference in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, I attended a technical conference in India. My friend Ravi took me to some remote villages far away from the big cities. I have visited India many times in the past but this time I wanted to see something different. We visited a small community college in Maharashtra where information technology education has been introduced. Most students were very poor (on average, their family\u2019s income is 60-100 rupees, or US $2, per day). Due to these extreme poverty, all of them have to work during the day time to help their parents in the fields of sugarcane and vegetables. I met several teachers, many graduated from top schools but were willing to come and worked at these remote villages. Some even volunteer there because they wanted to make a difference in these people\u2019s lives. Since many students could not go to school in the day time, they had classes in the evening.<\/p>\n

What I saw, heard, and experienced was inspiring. The school administration explained to me that they received fifteen used computers from the government and they were shared among over eighty students. The students learned programming (C++ and Java) with the hope that they could get a better jobs after graduated. During the time when I was there, the electricity went out several times, even in these adverse situation, I still saw a lot of hopes among these young students. They dream of making $5 dollars a day, which is twice of what their parents are making. One student told me that his dream is owning a used computer so he could access the internet and learn more. A teacher told me that prior to this program, the school only teach vocational skills such as construction and farming but recently it is difficult to make a living as farmers or laborers, few other options existed, and advanced education was rare, as families were eager to gain another source of income.<\/p>\n

When the new IT training program came to them few years ago, the school started offering programming classes with positive results. Two classes, totaling 120 students have graduated thus far. All of these graduates were now working for software companies in larger cities. This is a great achievement because the school was able to hire few computer teachers. Some volunteer to came and teach regardless of the low wages and hardships. One teacher told me: \u201cWhen I was young, my family was very poor. Because of a government scholarship, I was able to go to college and graduated in computer science. I know that I can make a good living in big cities but as a poor person, I know what poverty is so I volunteer to return here to make a difference. My students have to work all days in the fields to help their family but they come to school in the evening because education is the only way of getting out of poverty. Technology gives them the hope to get a better jobs. Today many can step out from the cycles of poverty that their ancestors have endured for generations to make a livelihood for themselves. I am sure, their future generations will be transformed because of it. Information technology is the key driver that can help transform a poor country like India.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is no question about it. Good training and motivated students can make a difference but most of all it is the dedication and commitment of good teachers that make all these things happen.<\/p>\n
