The computer industry has a new terminology: \u201cAppillionaire\u201d or people who make million dollars selling mobile application via the Apple store. These are ambitious software developers who focus on developing mobile apps for Apple. They use tools such as MacBook, iPhone, or iPads to create all kinds of application to be sold in Apple stores in over 80 countries. They dream of money pouring in their bank accounts every time their app is downloaded.<\/p>\n

According to Apple, their stores sell about $250 million dollars each month. So far, over 10 billion apps have been sold and Apple has over 80,000 software developers committed to work for their iOS (iPhone and iPad operating system). However, it is important to note that for every \u201cAppillionaire\u201d making millions, there are thousands who have their dreams evaporated in smoke. The success and failure in this new market is so great that many people called it \u201cApple Casino\u201d but every day, more and more developers are still coming to try their luck at Apple store. The newspapers and TV always have stories about successful few but never mention about developers who struggling to make money on their works. When a software company failed, it is easy to know how much money have been lost but with app developers, many works alone in their own home, it is impossible to know how much efforts and money have been wasted.<\/p>\n

A mobile app developer admitted to a TV interview: \u201cOf course, I understand the risk. I am attracted to the thrill of not quite sure whether I will have a \u201cTop Hit\u201d or not. However, it is still exciting as you watch the number of your App being downloaded and count the money deposited in your bank account. Sometime you make hundred thousand dollars, sometime you make few hundred and sometime you only make few dollars. I know it is like gambling or playing a lottery but no one know whether they are lucky or not. There is no businesses where that feeling is more stronger than iOS development. Everything about mobile app is uncertain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many people considered selling mobile app at Apple Store is like a gambling where developers are betting a lot of their efforts and time on luck because not many people can develop games like \u201cAngry Bird\u201d who sold million dollars each month but many people are still trying. A developer said: \u201cYou work hard and watch your app being downloaded. You go crazy when it hit the \u201cTop 50\u201d. When you are there, the money are pouring in. Then you wait to see if it go to \u201cTop 10\u201d list, this is where you begin to count million. Of course, most of the time, it does not happen that way. But it is no different from go to a casino and gamble. Now with iPads your chance is double but more people will come to play too. However, develop mobile software is fun and challenging. Many people are willing to give it away with no money as they just want their works to be used. Imagine thousands of people are playing with an app that you created, it is exciting. Just like you write a novel and have thousands people read it, enjoy it. To many writers, money is not an important issue as the number of readers. It is the same with App developers. We just love to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is that feeling, both craziness and aspiration, and maybe with little monetary rewards that drives thousands of developers to create apps for Apple and that number is increasing every day. The reality is most developers who dream to make a lot of money will be disappointed. Few years ago when mobile app is new, the chance to become the \u201cAppillionaire\u201d is high because there are only few apps available. Today, there are so many, most developers can only count few hundred dollars, if they are lucky. Few years ago, most mobile apps come from the U.S and UK but today, there are many come from India, China and lesser known countries. The market is already saturated with so many apps, most of the quality apps that sold well are from software companies, not individual.<\/p>\n

While many developers understand the reality and accept it. Some feel a sense of lost and angry. The fact is success in any market is often happened to the early one, the one who know how to seize the opportunity when it is few product and less competition. Mobile app opens new door of opportunity for many developers but for every successful one, there are several thousand failures. The App Store is full of dreams to be \u201cApp superstar\u201d and hopes to be \u201cAppillionaire\u201d but most ended in frustration.<\/p>\n

However, one thing that Steve Job did very well that he may not even imagine. He changes the youth culture and made developing software for Apple a \u201cCool\u201d profession. Not long ago, most people did not talk about software, or app. Today, everyone talk about it. In most parties \u201cSoftware\u201d or \u201cApp\u201d has become the key topic of conversation. For example, people often say \u2018Have you seen this app, have you seen that app?\u201d Then they would pull their iPhones and show certain apps for others. The term \u201cApp developer\u201d is treated with respect as a creative person, who do something with Apple.<\/p>\n

Even Steve Job is gone but his image of a developer in blue jean and black turtle neck sweater has become a symbol for software developer all over the world. At parties, coffee shops, and bars people with the job title of \u201cApp developer\u201d or \u201cApp programmer\u201d is often treated with as much interest as a rock star or movies star, and they attract a lot of young girls\u2019 heart.<\/p>\n
