We have many successful technology companies but most of them are outsourcing services not innovation companies like Apple, Google or Microsoft? Is there something that we do not know?

I told him: “Innovation requires a state of mind, a new kind of thinking, an ability to recognize opportunity, and a risk taking attitude. It depends mostly on the education systems whether you promote innovation thinking or not. Most Asian education systems are still following the tradition system of passive learning where teachers transmit knowledge and students follow the direction rather than thinking outside of the system. This passive learning does not encourage new thinking, new ideas, or the ability to recognize new opportunities. No one wants to initiate anything new but wait for instruction from teachers. When they go to work, they also wait for direction from managers. No one wants to risk anything as they are afraid of failure. At this time, most students are happy to go to school, get a degree, get a job with good wages; few would want to do anything else. No one wants to break the tradition.”

“Another issue is the public attitude with failure. In the U.S failure is normal, nobody laugh about you if you start a company and it fails. In Asia, failure is very bad and carries a burden to a person and the family. In the U.S failure is a lessons learned but in Asia it is a “Loser image” that nobody want to associate with. To start your own software company is a risk that many people do not want to do.”

“There is another issue that Indian students told me: The arranged-marriage system in India. A software graduate who work for company like Infosys, TCS, Wipro or IBM would often command the best marriage proposals. In India, many rich families want their daughters to marry software engineer who works for a well known software company. They are willing to come up with a lot of dowry incentives (In India, dowry is for the woman’s family to give to a man during marriage). A software engineer who does not work for a software company but want to start his own company is not considered a “Good candidate for marriage”. Indian society believes that after graduate, if you cannot get a good job, you are “loser” and young girls never look at “loser”. The tradition in India is nearly all the graduates will go to work for government, with the intention to become politicians, or work for foreign investment banks, and recently work for software company in the outsourcing industry. All of these positions offer good salaries. If they are single, they can attract a lot of attentions from rich and well connected families that have daughters. There is no reason to start your own company or doing anything differs from this tradition.”

My friend Ravi told me: “If you go to college and study software, you will not have any problem getting girl friend. Thirty years ago, Government jobs were hot then twenty years ago, Foreign banking jobs were hot but today, software is the best job in India because of the high salaries and prestigious positions.”

This fall when I went to India, I noticed that some changes were happening. I met several entrepreneurs who created their own companies. All of them told me that it was difficult at first because their parents were not happy but they determined to do what they believed in. The first was Vishal Gondal, he is considered the “Bill Gates” of India. He dropped out of school to start his company called “Indiagames” when he was only 16. Six years later, he sold his company for a multi-million dollar then started another company. Now he became a billionaire with several companies under the portfolio called “Sweat & Blood Venture Group”. When I asked about his venture, he said: “I love technology, especially computer games so I dropped out of school and started a company. At that time I did not know much about the business so I made many mistakes. Even I was successful now, I never advise anyone to follow that step. I always told them to complete school first, learn as much as you can then start your company.”

Another person is Ajay Mahesh, who worked in the outsourcing industry for two years then left to start a software security company with few friends. He told me that all of them got pressure from their parents not to do “Stupid” thing. He himself also had his proposed marriage cancelled. He said: “My parents could not understand why I would leave high-paying jobs to start a company with a lot of risks. My fiancée also thought that I was crazy so she found another engineer who worked for Infosys. I was heartbroken for few months but I wanted to follow my dream.” Few years later, when computer security became a major issue in the industry, his business took off. When he made few million dollars that year, nobody complain anymore. Today his company employed over one hundred employees with an annual revenue reaching forty million dollars. He said: “Now I do not have any problem, my parents received several proposed marriages for me already and they are selecting a wife for me.”

My friend Ravi told me that few years ago, most software companies were started by people who had worked in the U.S. Many took advantage of the low labor cost in India to build outsourcing services but recently it changes. Now India has entrepreneurs who start their own innovation companies to build different products and services for their own people. It seems that young people begin to change their thinking and do not want to follow the tradition anymore. He hopes that in the next few years, India will have companies that could compete with Microsoft or Google then everything will change.

Trong cuộc thăm viếng của tôi tới Ấn Độ năm 2005, một người bạn Ấn Độ hỏi tôi: “Chúng tôi có những đại học tốt …

[1

post-1877","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-xu-huong-toan-cau
["GET
