You can learn many things on your own from reading e-books, technical websites and making money quickly than waste time and money in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Answer: Short term certificate training is good for somebody who only needs to get a JOB. College education is good for people who want to build a CAREER. It is a personal choice. Today most good paying jobs require at least a college degree. However, you do NOT go to college just to get a degree BUT to get educated and to develop good learning habit about lifelong learning. In college, you acquire necessary knowledge and open your mind to many things so you can understand how everything work together; how business operated, how the economy is driven, how society functions and you can look at the future job market in five years, ten years and prepare for your career. Even after getting a job, you know how to keep it, grow it, and move up in this competitive market.<\/p>\n<p>Today information technology is changing fast and the pace of change has still increasing so it may move the entire industry into something new in the next few years. What you learn today may not be needed for tomorrow and unless you are prepared, you may not be able to keep your job. Short term trainings prepare you for today\u2019s job based on what are needed but NOT for tomorrow\u2019s job so you are always following the trends rather than anticipate it and prepare for it. When things change, when the market needs something new, you will have to go to another short term training to obtain new skill. Few years ago, coding and testing skills are good enough to get a job but it is changing now. Today there is increasingly demands of customers and users for faster, better and easier to use electronic devices such as smart phones and tablet computers. With cloud computing and social networking the industry is changing more into a service oriented focus instead of product oriented focus. With cloud computing, big data, and mobile platforms, the industry is changing the infrastructure for faster and more efficient and it needs people with sophisticated skills such as integration and architecture rather than people with a few months of training of Joomla or Java programming.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge for today\u2019s students is to adapt to these changing environments quickly to keep pace with industry expectations. They need to find a way to be valuable to the overall business by helping it to achieve its objectives. Students also need soft skills because they need to get out of the office to work with customers. They need to understand what their problems are and how they can help solve those problems. They need to understand about simplification, standardization, modularity, and integration to create an infrastructure that will meet the new demands of customers, business, and users, etc. In the cloud, software, platforms and infrastructure are delivered as services that can be deployed, re-arranged, and structured quickly to ensure a level of security to manage collaboration between employees, businesses, users, and customers.<\/p>\n<p>Although technology drives the market and global economic growth, it also destroys jobs and creates the need for new ones. Technology often eliminates more jobs, especially low-paying minimum-knowledge positions and replacing them with jobs that are higher pay and higher skilled. This puts more emphasis than ever before on students to increase their knowledge and skills. As most low-level jobs area replaced by technology such as robots and automation, workers will need to acquire new trainings to obtain new skills, if they are to find new jobs in this fast changing global economy. For example, you may look at what happens when a factory implements robots to replace workers who perform simple tasks on the manufacturing line. The value for the company is that robots have a high up-front cost and require programming and maintenance, but over time, the company will save money in comparison to hiring a lot of workers who need to be paid salaries. Combine those simple economics with the idea that technology has continued to improve over the past several decades, and it becomes clear that, we can expect that trend of improving technology to continue into the future, even to the extreme point where there is the eventual elimination of all manual workers from the factory.<\/p>\n<p>The question is: \u201cIs a college education really worth?\u201d It depends on your field of study as some fields are worth a lot more during a lifetime of work. There are several studies on the differences in earning between one field and another, and some can be more than three times as NOT all college degrees are equal. For example, a graduate with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Science can make $85,000 to $90,000 a year as compare to a graduate with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Business administration who can make $55,000 to $65,000 (2011 data). The potential is also significant in the next decade because according to a global study, there will be over 35 million job openings that require at least a college education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). What you study in college today will determine what you will do in the future. Professionals like software engineers, scientists tends to have two careers, they can have a technical career then overtime have a second career as a managers and make a lot more money than be a workers.
