Learning on the internet<\/p>\n

I have received several emails asking about internet classes where students can learn about technology subjects that are not available in their schools. There are many online courses available on the internet, some from private companies, some from consultants, some from individual, and some from universities.<\/p>\n

Among the popular online websites is \u201ciTunes U\u201d created by Apple founder Steve Jobs. His vision is to provide education to the world at no cost. Anyone can download course lectures and slides materials without have to pay anything. Anyone can enroll in classes offer by top universities such a Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Yale etc. through \u201ciTunesUniversity\u201d. As long as you want to learn and willing to put your effort in these class, you can benefit significantly.<\/p>\n

There are stories about people who learn on line in a local newspaper. One of them is Zhu Yi who lived in Yunnan, China. He has been a good student of the online app development class since 2010. He has created several applications for sale in Apple’s App Store. His apps provide him with extra money and he said: “I hope someday I can live off this, because I love doing it,” He told the newspaper:\u00a0“You learn a lot by watching the lectures on iTunesU. If you want to have success you need to keep on learning new things. Since I cannot go to StanfordUniversity, this is the best thing that can happen to me. I have the same professor, the same class, and the same materials with students at Stanford without paying anything.”<\/p>\n

Of course, online students hear the same lectures as classroom students, but do not get Stanford degree. Zhu Yi said: \u201cIt does not matter whether I get the degree or not, I learned a lot. The knowledge and the skills will stay with me for the rest of my life. There are so many online courses, so many subjects that you can learn as long as you are willing to put in your efforts. If you do not like to study computer, you can learn Biology, Geography, History, Philosophy, almost whatever you want to learn is available online.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ajay Vishnu, another online student from India said that the iTunes U class is “excellent\u201d because of its quality teaching and the lectures are so easy to follow\u201d. Since he is very poor, his family cannot afford to send him to school, so he learns everything through the internet. Within few months, he has learned several programming languages such as C++, Python and Objective C in the online courses. He said: \u201cMost computer programming classes are abstract, but Objective-C to build applications for mobile devices is more easier. I learn the programming basics and apply them right away. That is why it is very practical for someone like me.”<\/p>\n

Ajay is currently working as mobile programmer for a small software company in India. He said: \u201cI do not have a degree so I cannot get job at good company. However I have the skills and this company is willing to give me a chance. After few weeks, the owner was surprised that I did better than most people in the company. Many have degrees from university. He asked me where did I go to school and I said: \u201cStanford\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to a new research, a majority of online students are from developing countries with the highest number come from India, Africa and China. Many could not afford to pay for schools so online is their only hope to get a education. It is estimated that there are over 100 million people enroll in online classes and the number is increasing each year.<\/p>\n
