Skills and jobs<\/p>\n

As I travelled in several places, both in Asia and Europe, and all I heard people talk about are \u201cJobs, jobs, and jobs\u201d. It is an absolute dominant theme that job is the number one issue in many countries. A professor in Germany told me that whatever happen in Europe will spread to other countries soon because so many young people are facing uncertain future and unemployment. Many governments are beginning to work on plans to create more jobs.<\/p>\n

Of course, creating jobs would be a wonderful thing and it helps improve the economic problems that many countries are facing today. But being a researcher in globalization and technology, I do not think people realize that there are many good jobs available, jobs that go unfilled in many countries. Last month, when I taught a seminar in Germany, I asked my students to go on line and search for \u201cInformation technology\u201d jobs. They found over 300,000 listings where companies are looking for the right skilled workers. Encouraged by this finding, I called several friends in France, Spain, Russia, Japan, China, and India and asked them to do the same. They all told me that there were hundred thousands of job in IT available in their countries. It confirmed the news that there is significant shortage of skilled workers in the IT industries. What more interesting is that not all open positions are listed on line or in newspapers because some open positions are not actually advertised. In this case, the real number of open positions waiting for somebody to fill them could be much higher.<\/p>\n

My point is simply that the common complain about “we need more jobs” cover up a major problem: The growing gap between the skills companies need and what people have in terms of qualifications. This is the point that we all need to do a better job of addressing. Politicians make promise to win elections based on jobs that they will create. Government officials blame the economic crisis as cause for the lack of jobs. Economist state that globalization create unemployment. They may all correct in their own views. However, as educator we need to look at the fact: The problem that many countries are facing today is the inability to change with technology changes. Some change faster therefore the problem is less severe. Some are slow to change therefore the problem is exploding when it comes as the case of some countries in Europe.<\/p>\n

The solution is to provide better training in \u201cmarketable job skills\u201d to people. Today education system is a \u201cFree market\u201d with no clear direction and no vision. Students can select whatever they want to study regardless whether those fields of study are needed or not. Some professors would be happy to teach some fields that are no longer needed because they can keep their jobs. Of course, young students do not know how to choose, or select certain areas to study. Many will select whatever easy to get in, whatever fun, whatever that do not require a lot of efforts. This is not their faults but our fault as educators as we did not do a good job in advising them.<\/p>\n

Today there is a big communication gap between industry and university. It is about time that both must work together to close this gap. Industry must let university know what they need and how many workers they are willing to hire. University must step out of the \u201cacademic sentiment\u201d and focus on training the requisite skills to match the rapid changes in technology being demand by the industry. University and industry must be partners to help students with the skills needed at the workplace. Today, all over the world, companies are spending a lot of time and money retaining graduates to bridge the skills learned in college and the requirements needed in the industry. The problem is compounded by global expansion and competition among companies, which is creating a new set of skills that many graduates are not competent to handle.<\/p>\n

Some people may disagree with my suggestion as they believe education is a choice that students should make. Academic training is to develop a \u201ctotal person\u201d, not workers to the industry. That concept may be right in the past but no longer valid in this fast changing world. Academic people should not maintain the sentiment that students know what they want, choose what they want, because educators\u2019 job is to teach not to influence them in their choices. The time is changing and the need is urgent. This is not the time for discussion as we are all sitting in a time-bomb and do not know when it will exploded. Students are the future of the society, if they are not properly trained than as educators we are not doing our jobs. I do not advocate forcing anyone to study anything. I only recommend collaboration between industry and university for the future of students. We need to break the \u201cphilosophy\u201d discussion about education and get back to the concept of training, and investing in education because our students are eager to learn something new. They all want to have a good careers so they can contribute to the prosperity of the country, they all deserve a better future.<\/p>\n
