Women in computer<\/p>\n

I received an email where the sender wrote: \u201cI want my daughter to study computer science but my husband said that is not a career for women. He wants her to study education and become a teacher. My daughter is in her last year of high school. She is a good student, does well in math and science and have received several awards. She has been study English for several years and is able to read and write English well. She has a laptop and already learned some programming languages. Even she is undecided about what to study in college but I think she would choose computer with some encouragements. Where can I find out more information about women as computer scientists? How could I convince her to study computer? Please advise.”<\/p>\n

Answer: Today there are many women studying computer science, software engineering and Information System management. Some have become famous such as Grace Hopper or Barabara Liskov etc. Many have become leaders or Chief Executive officer (CEO) of large software companies such as Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, and Carol Barz etc. I think your husband may need to know that the world\u2019s first computer programmer is a woman: Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace. She worked on Charles Babbage’s early mechanical general-purpose computer. She created the first algorithm intended to be processed by that machine. Today the industry also named a programming language after he: The Ada language. Of course, the decision is still her choice but I believe she could do well in any field that she chooses. I would be delighted if she select computer science or software engineering.<\/p>\n
